Rare's Sea of Thieves recently celebrated its third anniversary, and now, to top it off - this unique pirate sandbox has been recognised as the 'Best Evolving Game' of 2020 at this year's BAFTAs.
It managed to fend off other titles such as Destiny 2, No Man's Sky and Fortnite. Indie hit Hades took out a total of five awards and the 2020 game of the year (which was the only public vote) went to The Last of Us Part II.
Rare recently shared the following message to the Sea of Thieves community, thanking everyone for their support and promising that there was more to come:
"Thank you again to all the players who have joined us on our journey so far – across Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam. We wouldn’t be here without your support and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve got coming in the rest of 2021. See you on the seas!"

What a comeback.
Would love to give this a go. But all my friends are still on Playstation.
Does the game, play well with randoms? (is that even an option?)
Or is this the kind of game where you get spawn killed when you leave the starting area?
Happy that LOU2 won the people’s game of the year as it’s one of my favourite games ever but as Hades win BAFTA goty can’t wait to try it out when it hits GP.
The awards just shows me how many great games I’ve still to play yet.
Hope they release some new weapons or reload system. Hadn't played the game in almost 3 years & the gunplay could benefit from some evolution. Also a megalodon totally murdered me once my friend hopped offline and I was turning in oir last chest. Still love the charm in the game, I even recognized a bunch of the islands still!
@agito1987 you can get paired up with randoms, it's still pretty fun that way and I've had people be really helpful, even if some people leave their mics off haha. The servers still have a ton of people so still a lot of fun to be had there. Getting spawn killed happens super infrequently since the map is so big. I maybe had it only happen once or twice out of dozens of hours of play, most of the time it's smooth sailing when you start.
@Kilamanjaro
Thanks for the reply, will give it a go in the weekend =).
I haven't played it still. Has this really improved more than No Man's Sky has though?
These game awards are pointless
Have they patched this in any way to make it more 'solo' friendly yet?
Last night the Xbox controller only servers were surprisingly busy. I only play with controllers because it's normally quiet and I know I'd get murdered paired with everyone as I play solo and hide in a rowboat.

@StonyKL
Uhm, the official twitter account says Hades won GOTY.
Edit: There are two GOTY, apparently. -_-
@gingataisen Lol! Yeah was sort of my point. I loved LOU2 (on my 4th play through!) but if Hades beat it in the awards then can’t wait for the GP release!
