You might remember that back in March, Astro confirmed that its gaming products designed for Xbox One would continue to offer continuous compatibility on Xbox Series X, even despite its lack of optical audio port. And now, the company has provided more details about exactly how they will work on the system.
Astro says that its entire line of gaming headsets will function on Xbox Series X, but some may require a firmware update which will be available via the Astro Command Center software on the console's launch day.
- A10 Headset
- Gen 1 – Supports game sound and voice chat via the 3.5mm port on the Xbox Controller.
- A20 Wireless
- Gen 1 – Requires a firmware update which enables game sound and voice chat over USB.
- Gen 2 – Requires an included USB transmitter to transmit game audio and voice chat.
- A40 and A40 TR Headsets
- Gen 1-4 – Supports game sound and voice chat via the 3.5mm port on the Xbox Controller.
- MixAmp Pro TR
- Gen 3 & Gen 4 – Requires a MixAmp firmware update which enables game sound and voice chat over USB.
- A50 Wireless + Base Station
- Gen 3 & Gen 4 – Requires headset and base station firmware updates which enable game sound and voice chat over USB.
- Other MixAmps
- M60 – Supports game sound and voice chat via the 3.5mm port on the Xbox Controller.
- M80 – Supports game sound and voice chat via the 3.5mm port on the Xbox Controller.
For Spatial Audio, the ASTRO A50 and MixAmp Pro TR can utilize Dolby Atmos by installing the Dolby Access app on Xbox or PC (no purchase required) and Dolby Atmos is available as a separate purchase on all other ASTRO products. All ASTRO Xbox products can also utilize Windows Sonic for Spatial Audio.
In addition, Astro has confirmed that all of its gaming headsets will continue to retain full compatibility with the Xbox One even after applying the firmware update, so you'll be able to seamlessly switch between the two.
Pleased about this? Will you be using your Astro headset on Xbox Series X? Let us know in the comments.

Sony’s next-gen PS5 console will be scrapping optical audio support, just like the Xbox Series X.

I have a Plantronics RIG 400.
Honestly, with the way Atmos for Headphones works, any headset will do. Just pay the $15 for Atmos for Headphones license (or get a set of headphones with a code for Atmos for Headphones included).
There really isn't any need to buy these expensive headphones that have base stations or processing or any of that since the system itself can handle all the surround virtualization for you. A 3.5mm connection to your controller is all you need!
Mine is the... ASTRO A40 TR HEADSET + MIXAMP M80 (GEN3). It's the first gaming headset that I have bought but I'm very happy, if that helps anyone.
@GamingFan4Lyf I care more about the quality of the sound so I didn't get a totally wireless unit nor a sound processor. Xbox is the best audio processor and Xbox Windows Sonic is free so there's no need to pay for Dolby if you play on Xbox.
I’ve made a topic on this site on the Series X forum about headphones and was going for the Penrose X by Audeze but now I see my old A40 (GEN1) will be compatible with Series X I think I’ll hold on to them and get the mod kit if they will fit. I’m happy using them with the 3.5mm cable to controller while using Dolby Atmos.
With the Series X’s Project Acoustics it seems we don’t need headsets that use its own virtual surround sound processing, all is needed is just a decent pair of stereo headphones and let Xbox’s own audio do the rest like Windows Sonic but I prefer Dolby Atmos although both are very similar.
