If you've been using external USB storage with your Xbox One over the years (we certainly have), you'll be pleased to hear it's still compatible with Xbox Series X. The downside? Xbox Series X games won't be able to run off it, and we're not exactly sure how it'll work alongside them just yet.

Again, this comes courtesy of the Digital Foundry video at the top of the page, who suggest that expandable storage will lead the way for Xbox Series X instead. Seagate will be providing small, removable SSD storage cards (no idea of price yet), which will operate in a similar way to USB storage on Xbox One.

It's confirmed in the video that the Xbox Series X will still support USB storage, but it will only work with backwards compatible games, and will ultimately act as a backup drive in most cases. Here's what DF's John Linneman had to say in the video, who admits they don't know everything about USB storage on Xbox Series X just yet:

"The system does still support USB drives, but it's either for running Xbox One or other backwards compatible games, or you can use it to store the newer Series X games on it, but you can't run [them] from a USB."

It makes sense that USB drives won't be able to run Xbox Series X games given the demand they'll be placing on the console's premium 1TB SSD. That said, the idea of being able to store games for later on an external USB drive (as well as backwards-compatible games) could come in handy in the next generation.
