Very new to the Xbox world, so much so in fact that I've never played any Halo. I've got the MCC for my Series S and at a loss as to which one to dive into.
Is there one I should jump straight into or any I should avoid like the plague?
You could play them in order they were released, so Combat Evolved ,2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4 and 5 or you could play them in story time line which would make Reach the first then CE, 2, 3, ODST, 4 and 5.
I wouldn't say any of them are bad but for me ODST is the weakest of the lot.
I started them from reach and worked my way up. Currently starting 4 and already have 5 and Halo Wars 1 and 2 ready to go in prep of infinite.
I rather enjoyed ODST. It's outside of the main Halo story but i enjoyed the story they had and how they presented it. Reach was my least captivating out of the lot so far.
What is really great in Halo games is the "saga" feel of its story.
So, if you want to be ready for Infinite, maybe you should play the Master Chief adventures first (so Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4 and... Halo 5, yes).
But there will be summaries in Infinite, don't worry. ;D
@Krzzystuff It's crazy how everybody feels different about those "side-episodes". I consider Reach one the very best of all, and I was bored to death by ODST... at least, at first - it gets better near the end, in my opinion. But my mistake was to play it after Halo 3 (the events of ODST happen during Halo 2's campaign) ... and I especially didn't like the fact that a simple ODST can just lift a car like a Spartan xD
Still have to play Halo Wars 2, thought. I've read that the story is a direct continuation of Halo 5's events.
I'm currently 3/4 of the way through 4 and it's a fantastic game. Since I've just been playing through the whole catalogue one after the other vs waiting year's between games it's great seeing the massive jumps in visuals as you progress.
Also without nostalgia you're not predetermined to dislike any changes of modernising the game. It's hard to say which one I've liked the most so far as they are all great in their own ways. Play them all is the best recommendation
@Krzzystuff So I initially jumped straight into multiplayer on H5, the logic being with it being the most recent it’ll be the busiest. I pretty much end up shooting at shadows as the reactions aren’t what they used to be!! Still pretty fun though.
Single player wise I’ve gone with the saga approach (sucker for a good chronological story in a gaming series) and I’m playing through Halo CE, enjoying it so far! I dip in and out of multiplayer on 5 as well.
@Sandville nice. I just started Halo 5 last night, haven't tried the multiplayer yet. Gotta say I'm not getting the hate for 5, I'm only two missions in, but it's a lot of fun and the story is great so far.
When I wanted to start with Assassin's Creed last generation most people said start with 4 but I started with 1 and I'm glad I did. The first AC game is great, I really enjoyed it (on Xbox One), more than Breath of the Wild, they are not similar games but I played BotW (almost 100%) right before AC. Halo is the same, I started with 1. You have them all but 5 in the Master Chief Collection so start with the first one or Reach (prequel).
EDIT: I see you finally started with the first one, good.
Ok this might be the wrong place to ask but I am just looking for information. I haven't really played Halo games much, mostly just splitscreen co-op with friends but I was wonder about the online multiplayer.
After playing CoD the past few years and being disgusted by the last few games I have decided to look for another Online Multiplayer FPS game. I like the more arcadey style that CoD use to have so Battlefield is out-of the question for me. So I decided to look into the Halo series especially with this new one coming out.
The biggest question I have is what kind of progression does the online Multiplayer have. One thing that I enjoy in CoD is the progression. I like leveling up the guns and unlocking various things, perks, more guns, attachments. One thing I didn't like about Overwatch for example is the fact that levels don't mean really anything, yes you unlock cosmetics but that doesn't do anything for me.
Long story short what kind of progression does Halo have in multiplayer or is it just bragging rights?

So I'm a few hours into Infinite multiplayer and I've got to say It's brilliant, graphically it's very smooth and finding and joining games has been seamless so far.
Very impressed, I even managed to get a couple of kills...That won't last for long no doubt!!
