Topic: Confused concerning physical releases

Hey all, haven't been able to get a definitive answer on this from Googling so wondering if anybody here knows. Some games I have physical for Xbox. My question is, how do we know what version is on the disc? Some discs say "Xbox One - Series X" but others are the reverse "Series X - Xbox One." So which version is one the disc? If it says Xbox One first is that the version that is on the disc? If it says Series X first is that the version on the disc? Or do all Smart Delivery games just have the Xbox One version on the disc and download the Series X version? Sorry if this has been covered before but I couldn't find any good information online and thought one of you fine people on here might know for certain.

Maybe there is an easier way but if you install the game from the disc while the Xbox is disconnected from the internet then it should install without any patches.

From there if you press the Menu button on the game icon, click manage game and installation, click (I think) get info and look through all the gobbledegook, it will say either "Durango" or "Scarlett". Durango is the Xbox one version and scarlet is the Series version

See ya!

@ralphdibny Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a simple way to know from looking at just the packaging of the game, which is really unfortunate.

From most of my experiences, if it says Series X first and Xbox One second on the cover, then chances are the Series X version is on the disc. Unfortunately due to their compression being mediocre and them refusing to put games on UHD discs, most games only have a portion of the game on them regardless. You likely still wouldn't be able to play the game (at least not all of it) if you tried to install it while offline, as a lot of the time the so called patch is more than that and includes part of the game too.

I've yet to buy any of their newer releases that come completely separate where the Series X has it's own release (and the same with the Xbox One version), so I don't know if they finally switched to UHD discs for Series X only versions. That would be pretty cheap if they didn't since the PS5 has had games on UHD discs since day 1.

As good as Smart Delivery and their backwards compatibility is, it also has fairly major drawbacks since they refuse to release cross-gen games on two discs where both full versions would be there (unless it's a really huge game). Like I said above, their compression and use of Blu-ray discs keep the features from being as good as they could be since you still have to download a fairly large "patch" with plenty of games.

@KilloWertz Good insight. When they start releasing current-gen games that have no Xbox One version, I wonder if that will change or you will still need to download whatever is not included on the disc.

@Banjo- Thanks. It would really depend on which format they continue to release games on. If they would switch to UHD discs, it would help immensely. Unless they use multiple Blu-ray discs, there's no way for games that approach 100 GB to be fully on the physical copy you buy. On PS5, I was able to install the full Horizon Forbidden West game that was 90 GB from the disc since they use UHDs. The only thing I had to download was the day 1 patch.

@KilloWertz Okay but UHD Blu-Ray has 50, 66 or 100GB (triple-layer) so they'd need to use triple-layer discs. The problem that remains on both consoles is when games are massively patched, I mean, new gameplay modes and new video modes are added, that transform the games completely. That and the good digital sales is why I ditched physical in the beginning of the last generation but, of course, there are people that still prefer physical and as long as they exist, these questions make sense, like what version is included on the disc, etc.

Until I read this thread, I thought that the Xbox One version was the only one on the disc because it's smaller and the Series S/X is downloaded via Smart Delivery. That is why I was wondering if the full game would be included when Xbox One versions no longer exist.

@Banjo- At least for some games, if not all, they do use them on PS5. Like I said, a large 90 GB game like Horizon Forbidden West was fully on the disc. That's nice, and an annoyance on the Series X when I was using it more regularly and good internet wasn't really an option for me at the time. Patches will obviously still be an issue, and obviously a game like Assassin's Creed Valhalla that got a patch at one point that basically retooled the whole thing to make it smaller and other things now renders the disc borderline useless.

No big deal, as I believe I am remembering correctly about the Series X version being on the disc if it's listed first on the cover (aside from the fact that no cross-gen game I can remember actually has a full version of any game on the disc). I'm sure they do exist for small sized titles, but having a mixture of physical and digital doesn't help. They now do release games completely separate, which hopefully helps as well.
