Talking Point: Looking Back, How Useful Has Smart Delivery Been To You On Xbox?

Nobody really talks about Xbox Smart Delivery anymore, and that kinda makes sense! It's the name for a service that supports free upgrades from Xbox One titles to their Xbox Series X|S versions, with hundreds getting the treatment over the years. Now that we're five years into the current generation, it understandably gets much less of the spotlight.

Let's not forget how great Xbox Smart Delivery has been to us, though. There was a time (early Xbox One era, we're looking at you) where you'd have to fork out full-price to upgrade from a last-gen game to its current-gen counterpart, even if the changes were minimal. Smart Delivery changed all that - the likes of Gears 5, Forza Horizon 4, Halo Infinite, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077 and many other amazing AAA titles were granted a free upgrade from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, regardless of whether you bought them physically or digitally.

23 titles in all were supported at launch, and this grew massively over the next couple of years.

It was somewhere around late 2022 / early 2023 that we stopped tracking Xbox Smart Delivery titles, but the service has continued to quietly do its job in the background, with loads of games even in the last month having added the service as a capability - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4, Descenders Next, My Friendly Neighborhood, etc.

And so, for those of us who have massive Xbox Series X|S libraries, we can probably look back at Xbox Smart Delivery and be very thankful for the money it's saved us along the way! All in all, I personally feel it's one of the best innovations of the generation, and here's hoping it'll continue whenever the next Xbox console rolls around.
