I didn't even remember that they had announced it all the way back in 2020, but I spent a large amount of time playing State of Decay 2 with friends prior to the 2024 trailer, so I've been so disappointed to hear nothing about SoD3 for years. In the mean time, game after game that was announced more recently has already released. I don't care if games take a long time to be developed. If the game is good, it was worth the wait. Still, why even bother with trailers multiple years before release? You've built hype, let it die, and now need to build it up again when the release finally approaches. Beyond that, keeping us on the hook this long means the disappointment will be that much greater if the game doesn't live up to the expectations that we have built up, and I'm sure I'm not the only person to have a lot of mistrust for future projects from a developer that builds a lot of hype for a dud.
I'm absolutely thrilled about this, especially as someone who has gone back and played the originals recently and is very aware of the graphical limitations. It'll be lovely just having proper 16:9 without mods.
For people who are unfamiliar with these games: the game is very much one of figuring out not just where to go, but how to successfully navigate the terrain without injury or death. Laura does not move fluidly like you might assume, especially if you are a younger gamer. Navigating platforms require lining yourself up, and gauging not only the length of the gap, but how much of a running start you need before the jump. This ends up meaning that the clear cut tiles the the map is made from is not only a sign of the times the game was developed in, but also a bit of a requirement so that the player can has on clear measurement of distance, so that they can plan their next moves in a way that becomes more and more natural as you play.
This might not make much sense until you play it yourself, but it is a thoughtful sort of puzzle platformer that feels very rewarding to come to grips with.
I agree it deserved an award, but it speaks to how great the competition was this year. I honestly felt that every award this year was well deserved, which makes me think they must have changed things given all the criticism over how much of a joke the awards seemed to be last year.
@JayJ I suppose if it had been on sale I wouldn't have been quite so disappointed, but yeah, while visually it's surprisingly good (especially for what I assume was a very small dev team), the gameplay disappointed me greatly. I think I got Suzy Cube right around that time, and found that to be a much more enjoyable 3d platformer despite its visual simplicity and clear budget constraints. It also asked a more reasonable price.
Burned through this one back when it released on PC. I was extremely disappointed by it and still don't understand the positive reviews. I found it painfully basic and easy the whole way through. It felt like more of a student project than anything, and I've played far more enjoyable student project games. The only reasons I played it through were that I was hoping it would get better and more challenging as I got further along, and that I hoped I'd feel I got my money's worth out of it. Neither came true.
According to wikipedia this game originally released in 1993 on Mac. Revisiting the game in 2021 I manage to get trapped in a doorway within the first couple hours, and the game autosaved when it happened, so all my progress is lost.
If you're playing this, don't trust the autosaves. They somehow managed to release a 28 year old game with game-breaking bugs.
I know that's somewhat harsh criticism as this is a remake, but mechanically, this is a very basic game and they've done very little to modernize it or, apparently, bug-proof it.
EDIT: turns out they did actually add a safe guard for this: in the settings there is a "TELEPORT TO SAFE SPOT" button
