I feel like MS will do whatever is needed to make the most money to recoup the huge investments they’ve made in recent years. Currently hardware seems a tough way to do that for them, and the investments can be best linked to increased software sales across multiple platforms. Hence a lot of Xbox titles on PS5 now.
I hope next gen is some way off yet. I don’t feel this gen has really got going. If MS go for a more Xbox branded PC in a box then their ‘console generations’, such as they’ll be, could become less defined than PlayStation or Nintendo in future.
The launch of GTA6 could impact this I think. Other than make Rockstar a ton of money, it will sell PS5s and XS consoles. The lack of a PC version initially makes this more interesting in a way. If Sony win that battle by a significant margin, on top of their existing lead, it might accelerate MSs move to new hardware or abandoning hardware altogether and just offering Xbox software for third party console/handheld boxes. (Could see Valve going the same way with Steam Deck in time)
