In recent years, we've occasionally heard people talking now and again about the general lack of reviews for Xbox releases on websites like Metacritic - it's a common trend that PC and PS5 games get the majority of them.
This has been amplified more today by the situation regarding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, as the game currently only has 2 professional reviews for Xbox, whereas it has over 30 of them for PS5 and PC.
It even led to the official Call of Duty account missing out Xbox in its marketing material about this:
Now, from what we can tell, Xbox codes weren't provided ahead of time for the Xbox version in most cases. This has been alluded to by a few people on social media, including Windows Central's Jez Corden:
We also attempted to acquire an Xbox code for Modern Warfare 4 prior to release, but unfortunately weren't able to obtain one (Xbox's PR team are usually fantastic at sharing review access way ahead of time for first-party titles like Gears of War: E-Day and Halo: Campaign Evolved, but Call of Duty is typically handled by a separate team).
If at all possible, we'll still bring you a post-launch review in the near future - stay tuned on that.
Still, It's not the best look for a big game to be getting so few professional reviews on Xbox in any case, and MW4 is certainly not the only example of a situation like this, but it's the most notable because of being an actual first-party Xbox title.
Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet did acknowledge a question about this recently, so perhaps it's on the to-address list:
Who knows, maybe the Xbox Series S is causing issues in certain cases when it comes to reviews? Developers obviously have to target two separate consoles and release their review codes multiple weeks prior to release on Xbox, so maybe there's being stretched too thin in certain cases that go right up to the wire.
In any case, it'll be interesting to see if Xbox reviews for franchises like Call of Duty become more commonplace in the Project Helix era. We'll see!
