Here we go! The campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is officially available now in early access for anyone who pre-ordered the game digitally, which means the first reviews are starting to arrive as well.

The good news here is that most people seem to be high on it, with the general consensus being that it's an enjoyable campaign worth playing. Some have even gone as far as suggesting it's the best CoD campaign in many years!

Let's take a look at the reviews:

IGN (8/10)

"Modern Warfare 4 made me feel something for the series again. A consistently strong set of missions manages to juggle a bloated cast successfully, saying goodbye to familiar faces while building impressive bonds with new ones. Its expansive behind-enemy-lines mission that borrows most of its ideas from the DMZ mode is a real highlight, as is whenever its blockbuster ambitions are fulfilled and full-throttle battles break out. It may not have quite enough to be considered amongst the very best Call of Duty campaigns, but if it’s to be the end of this particular saga, then at least Modern Warfare is going out on a high note."

GameSpot (7/10)

"Overall, Modern Warfare 4 wraps up the series with several shocking moments and ends on a high note. The pacing never falters despite the two interwoven storylines and alternating POVs, and the wide variety of missions and locations ensure that the story remains engaging. Modern Warfare 4 is another edge-of-the-seat thrill ride. What distinguishes its campaign from others is a feeling that the devs had more time to think through the experience to create something that can serve as a worthy conclusion for the Modern Warfare series. Because of that, Modern Warfare 4’s campaign ranks as the best we’ve seen since Modern Warfare 2019."

Nintendo Life (No Score)

"I had a great time with Modern Warfare 4's 'popcorn game' campaign, old-fashioned approach and all. It doesn't so much integrate open-world and on-rails design as surgically separate them, but sometimes a little old-fashioned is just the ticket. And for Nintendo gamers, it's been a while."

GamesRadar (No Score)

"Modern Warfare 4 is a confident cinematic shooter that brings almost a decade of storytelling to a satisfying conclusion. Its spectacular set pieces, strong performances, and surprising moral complexity make for a campaign that's hard to put down, even when rigid mission design and frustrating restrictions threaten to spoil the fun."

PC Gamer (No Score)

"It speaks to the quality of this series lately that producing a regular campaign with extravagant setpieces, lavish cinematics, and basically great gunplay is a big win. Uncompromised by the influence of Warzone or Zombies, this is the first time in too long that Call of Duty's campaign does not feel like the afterthought."

GamesBeat (No Score)

"We aren’t giving an official review score on the whole game yet. But for the campaign, I would rate it at 4.5 out of 5. I will give a real overall review score later on. I don’t think the team succeeded in fitting the open-world gameplay into the compelling narrative, and it slowed down the pace of the game. It did add hours of potential gameplay for completionists, but it left me wanting more story, cinematics and close combat.Still, I played it and enjoyed what was there. And I appreciated the risks that Infinity Ward took in bringing Call of Duty back from the dead."

GamingTrend (No Score)

"For the most part, Modern Warfare campaigns tend to be strong. Modern Warfare 4 continues that trend, with a fresh perspective with matching fluid gameplay and mission flow. If the quality here is indicative of MW4’s online suite, we're in for another great year of COD."

As you can see, there are some really good impressions across the board for this campaign, which appears to bode well for a great Call of Duty all around in 2026. Another strong start for an Xbox first-party game this year!
