We're still only a few days removed from the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved, but we've already got some early sales estimates courtesy of the folks over at Alinea Analytics, and they make for pretty surprising results overall.
Simply put, the outlet says that the Halo 1 remake has made around 900k sales on Xbox, 452k sales on PS5 and 212k on Steam to date. The catch here is that the Xbox figure represents both console and the Xbox PC app, as well as the Premium Edition Upgrade that allowed Xbox Game Pass members to get early access to the game for a cheap price.
"Halo sold 351K copies on PS5 in July and 452K on PlayStation to date (almost $28M). And for comparison, Halo has sold through 212K on Steam and around 900K on Xbox (console and PC)."
Alinea says they're surprised how poorly the game has sold on PlayStation so far, calling it a "notably slow start" that "stings even more next to the success of two effort-light CoD ports".
They've evidently been comparing it to the success of the Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 ports on PlayStation last month, which reportedly made a whopping $435M - all but 30% of which has seemingly gone straight back into Xbox's pocket.
"Sony’s 30% platform cut there is roughly $130M for doing basically nothing but hosting two back-compat ports, with the rest flowing to Xbox (who owns CoD). Basically zero marketing or ongoing development costs are eating into that check."
Again though, we should reiterate that these are just sales estimates and it's still really early days for Halo: Campaign Evolved, with the standard release only going live last Tuesday. There's loads of time to see how the sales fare in the weeks and months ahead, and whether shipping games like this on PlayStation still makes sense in the future or not.
Perhaps the inevitable Halo 2 remake will be an Xbox exclusive instead? We'll have to wait and see...
