All the way back in January of 2020, Xbox studio Ninja Theory announced a new "in-development experimental title" in the horror genre known as Project: Mara. Details were very minimal at the time, but we did get a teaser trailer along with a brief description of what they were going for:

"Project: Mara will be a real-world and grounded representation of mental terror. Based on real lived experience accounts and in-depth research, our aim is to recreate the horrors of the mind as accurately and realistically as possible. Project: Mara will be an experimental title and a showcase of what could become a new storytelling medium."

Behind-the-scenes content for Project: Mara continued to trickle out over the next year-or-so, but then everything quickly went quiet, and official news on the game / project has basically been non-existent since around early 2021.

So, it comes as no surprise that Project: Mara has officially been cancelled. This was confirmed by Ninja Theory Studio Head Dom Matthews yesterday in an interview promoting the upcoming release of Senua (also a Ninja Theory title):

"With the fact that we have the entire team working on this game, I suspect some people might ask what’s happened to Project Mara [a previously announced horror title] – I took the decision to not work on that any further. These decisions are never easy, but I did so to take the opportunity to have all of the talent and expertise in the studio, all 85 creatives, working together to realize the potential of what Senua can be."

Interestingly, Windows Central's Jez Corden appeared on the Xbox Two Podcast back in January and explained that Project: Mara was only a concept, and that it may never turn into a finished game. He mentioned that it was something Ninja Theory wasn't currently working on, so it sounds like it's been shelved for quite some time now.

Could it return in the future? Maybe, but we're not expecting it to. Senua and the Hellblade series in general is clearly taking priority going forward, and we're sure they've learned a lot from the Project: Mara "experiment" along the way.
