Back in mid-April, we reported that Xbox was giving away Wasteland Remastered for free on the Microsoft Store, but something we didn't realise at the time was that after claiming it, players were struggling to get it to work at all.
It turns out it was never supposed to be given away for free anyway. The developer behind Wasteland Remastered (InXile Entertainment) has taken to social media to reveal that it was an "error" on Xbox's part, and that they're going to be removing the broken version from players' Xbox accounts as a result.
However, in a gesture of goodwill, they'll be rewarding those people with a working free copy instead.
"A couple weeks ago an error made Wasteland Remastered free on the Microsoft/Xbox Store, but what people snagged before we fixed the glitch can’t actually be played. So, we’re giving them one that can. If you were lucky enough to redeem it, you’ll soon see the (non-working) game removed from your library, and you’ll have a new copy to claim waiting for you in your Offers & Credits: https://xbox.com/play/user?openOffersAndCredits=true. Hope you enjoy and see you in the Wasteland."
As you can see, anyone who claimed the free copy of Wasteland Remastered is being directed to the Offers & Credits part of their Xbox account, where the new version will "soon" show up. If you're trying to find this on your console, go to the Microsoft Store app and then scroll up to your gamertag on the left-hand side of the screen, where you should see a little tab that says Offers & Credits. Alternatively, you can use the browser-based link above.
This is definitely a much-appreciated move from InXile — we've seen other developers rescind access in situations like this and provide nothing in return (which is totally understandable to be honest) — and here's hoping it makes a few more Wasteland fans in the process!
