The ROG Xbox Ally X is already a super-powerful handheld that we've been having a blast with here at Pure Xbox, and there are all sorts of ways to improve the visuals and frame rate on a whole bunch of titles. However, due to Microsoft's Auto SR technology, we're about to get yet another way of boosting the performance on the device.
Auto SR is short for "Auto Super Resolution", and the idea behind it is to "automatically lower the game's rendering resolution to increase framerate" ,and then employ "sophisticated AI technology to provide enhanced high-definition visuals". It's already applied to some games by default on specific CoPilot+ Windows PCs, but it can also be applied to certain other DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games "that are not enhanced by default".
At GDC this week, Xbox showed off Forza Horizon 5 running with the technology on the ROG Xbox Ally X, suggesting that it gets an "up to 30% FPS boost" when docked as a result of Auto SR. You can see this below:
As mentioned, Auto SR is set to arrive in preview form for ROG Xbox Ally X owners in April 2026, although it won't be available on the cheaper ROG Xbox Ally model — the "X" has a Neural Processing Unit, which allows Auto SR to function.
It's going to be interesting to see how useful Auto Super Resolution ends up proving for the device, and looking at the list enhanced games by "default", we're definitely interested in seeing how God of War fares with this tech!
Stay tuned, and we'll try and share some hands-on impressions with you in the weeks to come.
