Fallout 4 has gotten another new version here in 2026, more than a decade after the game's initial Xbox One release. Yep, Bethesda has ported its post-apocalyptic epic over to Nintendo Switch 2 recently, and the folks over at Digital Foundry have been seeing how this new edition of the game stacks up to previous versions, including Xbox Series S.

The outlet's latest tech review — which you can check out in video form above — looks at multiple console configurations for Fallout 4, including the 30, 40 and 60FPS modes. It's impressive that Switch 2 manages to deliver these modes in all honesty, but Xbox Series S does outmatch Nintendo's hybrid console in pretty much every area.

"Texture and shadow quality is a match for both Xbox Series S and PS5, largely because those assets are seemingly untouched from the 2015 original for last-gen hardware. However, there are some cutbacks. Draw distance is more in line with PS4 than Series S or PS5, with more obvious pop-in. Volumetrics are also curtailed with more noise and flicker. Meanwhile, Switch 2's 60fps DRS is more aggressive than Series S overall, especially in using their respective 60fps options.

Sparse areas hit the top 60 target, but dense environments or more intensive battles trigger unattractive frame-rate lurches - and in docked mode at least, there's no VRR to smooth off the worst of it. Taking the classic Corvega factory test as an example, Switch 2 hovers at 40fps while PS5 and Series S hold 53fps, for example. It's an interesting comparison, but remember that Switch 2 is also pulling back on draw distances here."

Speaking of the game's 60FPS mode, in that particular configuration, Xbox Series S manages a 1080p-1440p resolution range, while Switch 2 goes for 720p-1440p in docked and 504p-1080p in portable play. The full DF analysis also includes some comparisons of how both versions look in still images, which you can check out via the link down below.

The outlet sums up its latest Fallout 4 tech review by saying that Bethesda's new "porting effort to Switch 2 is a success", which after the disastrous launch of Skyrim on the same system, is a rather surprising turnout. Both of these versions seem like a good way to play Fallout 4, then, but Xbox Series S just about wins out this time around!
