One of the perhaps forgotten Xbox Game Studios releases of 2025 was Towerborne, with Stoic's action-RPG brawler arriving in early access on Series X and S following its 2024 debut on PC, and now it's about to finally get a full launch.
It was mentioned a long time ago that the plan for Towerborne was to transition it into a free-to-play release after early access, but that's no longer the case. Instead, it'll be launching on Xbox, PC and PS5 at a price of $24.99 (or $29.99 for the Deluxe Edition) on February 26th, and it'll serve as a "buy once, offline game".
Here's how this transition is described over at Xbox Wire:
"With this full game update, Towerborne shifts from its original vision as a free-to-play, always online title into a buy once, offline game – you will own the complete experience permanently, with offline play and online co-op.
This change required deep structural rebuilding over the past year, transforming systems originally designed around constant connectivity. The result is a stronger, more accessible, and more player-friendly version of Towerborne — one we’re incredibly proud to bring to launch."
As part of the "full game update" on February 26th, Towerborne will be making some major changes — there's now a complete story and final showdown, two new bosses, a fully reworked difficulty system, a reimagined World Map, new encounters and combat challenges, a ton of new cosmetics (all acquirable through gameplay), and much more!
Here's hoping people will be willing to give Towerborne a chance when it finally, properly releases in its 1.0 state on February 26th, and keep in mind that it'll be included with both Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Premium on that date!
"After listening to our community during Early Access and Game Preview, we learned players wanted a complete, polished experience without ongoing monetization mechanics. Moving to a premium model lets us deliver the full game upfront — no live service grind, no pay-to-win systems — just the best version of Towerborne."

Oh yeah. I remember this.. huh. Good on them for changing it up at least.
Looks like they realized they didn't have enough players to support the live service model and keep those servers up. Can't say I'm surprised. I'm really not interested even with the game being single player / offline mode now.
Damn. There goes my hope for a February Fable launch. Lol. Maybe this summer...
I enjoyed this one. This is good news in my opinion.
Nice! Fun game but I really hate F2P games so awesome that it’s going premium. (Of course, doesn’t hurt that it’s on GamePass)
If you like games like Castle Crashers, be sure to give this one a try!
I've played the game since early access. It's a lot of fun, but they never really hit that live service stride. There's also so much competition in that online only live service space now. The game's monetization also just was not it. Overall this is for the better. Really I was worried they'd cancel the game entirely. A pivot to a full release offline game with optional online is much better than no game at all when they'd inevitably close the servers cries in Anthem. Also, it's technically a day one premium game pass game, cool! Though the lack of a Switch 2 release is felt. If it's launching on PS5, then it should really launch on Switch 2 as well. That community would love it.
Great game from a great dev. The art and the combat blow away anything else in the genre. Glad it is ditching f2p and I hope it finds an audience.
I love the game. It is like a deeper Castle Crashers. Pretty endearing world all around.
I think this means development is finished for the game.
I really liked it when it first launched on Game Pass, especially in co‑op. Great evolution now that it can be played offline. I’ll have to get back into it to see what’s changed.
The Banner Saga was great! They should bring Towerborne to Switch also.
Great! Every game should do this from now on.
are they going to add achievements now only reason i didnt play it
