Forza Horizon 6 Is Tweaking Progression In The Hopes Of Addressing Common Series Complaint

Xbox has finally lifted the lid on Forza Horizon 6 this week, and while lots of the focus so far has been on open-world Japan and what Playground Games is packing into the world, we've spotted a nice bit of fan service that could have a major impact on how Horizon 6 plays.

Kicking off its gameplay overview at Xbox Developer Direct (and expanding on it in a follow-up blog post), the Playground team talked about campaign progression, and how it's aiming to make the early stages of FH6 feel more earned; missing this feeling became a common complaint with Forza Horizon 4, and even more so Forza Horizon 5.

Your journey in FH6 starts out as a mere tourist, and you'll have to compete in the Horizon Qualifiers to start out. Then, Playground is bringing back the 'Wristband' progression system from the very first Forza Horizon game, where you'll "rise through the ranks" and "complete races and events in faster and more exciting cars" as you progress.

The team says "Forza Horizon 6’s campaign is focused on your journey and building a name for yourself".

"Your first goal is to join the Horizon Festival, and you can do this by completing the Horizon Qualifiers. After that, you'll rise through the ranks, unlocking Wristbands as you complete races and events in faster and more exciting cars.

At the end of each Round, you must prove you're ready to move up by completing spectacular events to unlock your next Wristband. These include classic Horizon Showcases, and new Horizon Rush events where you show off your skills on thrilling obstacle courses, featuring exciting locations such as Tokyo City Docks."

Playground goes on to mention that "exploration is at the heart of Forza Horizon 6" and "Japan is yours to explore at your own pace" - but the studio does seem to have heard complaints that recent FH games can feel a little directionless at times. The team even teases a special high-level area of the map that's held exclusively for Gold Wristband players.

"When you finally earn your Gold Wristband, you will receive an invite to access Legend Island – an exclusive region of the world, with unique events, tracks and areas to explore. And once you make it there, it will be a true accomplishment, one that reflects your skills and determination."

We're digging the sound of this, and we hope that Playground can balance the freedom of recent FH titles with a more classic-feeling career mode that rewards player dedication. We'll be able to test it all out for ourselves very soon; when Forza Horizon 6 drifts on Xbox Series X|S and PC in May 2026.
