In an interview with Game File (via Windows Central), various Obsidian devs touched on AI following some old comments that the tech could be used in the writing process. Those comments (from 2019) by Obsidian's Leonard Boyarsky were hypothetical at the time - and the studio has now confirmed that "we haven't been using it [AI] at all".
It's becoming more commonplace that developers are using AI in some fashion during the game creation process, and with Obsidian in particular putting out three big games this year, you'd think they'd be the perfect case for speeding up some elements of game dev via AI. Well, that's not the case so far, with Josh Sawyer also adding that it's "not something we've used" at present.
It's nice to get this clarity from an Xbox studio, especially in a world where AI use seems quite a secretive topic at times. Of course, this could all change in future — AI use in game dev seems inevitable now to some degree — but for the time being, Obsidian hasn't used it. And as we previously mentioned, the team has put out Avowed, Grounded 2 and The Outer Worlds 2 this year!
