In the mood for a new hybrid side-scroller and gallery-shooter on Xbox? Neon Inferno might fit the bill!

This game is officially arriving on the Xbox Store on November 20th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and the first reviews have been pretty darn good on the whole, so it's well worth considering at the very least.

Developed by Zenovia Interactive (which formerly released Steel Assault on Xbox in 2023), Neon Inferno is described as featuring a "stylish, modern 2D action experience with cyberpunk flair", complete with an evocative soundtrack.

But does it live up to the hype? Here's what the reviews are saying for Neon Inferno so far:

GameSpew (9/10)

"With its fantastic visuals and thrilling gameplay that tasks you with dealing with enemies in both the background and foreground, Neon Inferno is a run-and-gun shooter that's not to be missed."

COGConnected (8.5/10)

"Neon Inferno is a brilliant run-and-gun shooter that not only captures the essence of its influences but builds upon them to create a remarkable, retro-inspired adventure. Its deep mechanics lead to fierce shootouts where bullets fly from every direction, testing your reflexes as you dodge and retaliate. Paired with its stunning visuals, it’s an incredible experience that fans of the genre simply can’t miss."

Video Chums (4/5)

"No matter how you play Neon Inferno, you're bound to have a great time thanks to its stellar gameplay and modern retro-inspired aesthetic."

GamerFocus (7.8/10)

"In short, Neon Inferno is a great arcade-style title that will delight players who focus on repeating a game over and over again until it is perfected and for others it will be a brief but entertaining distraction. It is also essential for lovers of good pixel art."

Push Square (6/10)

"Neon Inferno has nice visuals and is a solid throwback to classic arcade titles, though you may find yourself becoming overwhelmed by the high volume of enemies, projectiles, and more present on both parts of the screen."

As you can see, most critics are pretty hot on Neon Inferno as things stand, with the lowest score we've found being a 6/10 from our friends at Push Square. We appreciate getting a balance of opinions with any review roundup, so definitely check out their "cons" to see what they said - and keep in mind you can try Neon Inferno out for free!

Yep, the Neon Inferno Demo is available on the Xbox Store if you want to see what all the fuss is about, but just be warned that it's apparently caused issues for some players (there's a suggestion you need to disable HDR10/Dolby Vision to get it working properly).

We'll leave you with more details on the game itself below, along with some screenshots.

NEON INFERNO is a hybrid side-scroller and gallery-shooter where the action takes place in both the foreground and the background. As warring factions battle for control of a dystopian New York City, you enter the fray as an assassin for the Family — a notorious crime syndicate determined to eliminate its rivals and dominate the metropolitan battlefield. Rendered in beautiful pixel art and backed by an evocative soundtrack, Neon Inferno delivers a stylish, modern 2D action experience with cyberpunk flair.
