Star Wars Outlaws is now available on Switch 2, and the general consensus seems to be that the new port is rather impressive on Nintendo's hybrid console. However, what interests us the most so far about coverage on the new port is how closely it resembles the Xbox Series S version of the game - and Digital Foundry is here to analyse the two versions in a new comparison piece.

Viewable in video form up above, DF compares "Switch 2's first ray tracing game" with Ubisoft's Xbox Series S effort, and the results are rather interesting. Series S is also a system that often misses out on RT features, but it's here in Outlaws - and the overall look of the two games is very comparable despite some noticeable differences.

"Star Wars Outlaws features a number of cutbacks on Switch 2, but there's also a lot of continuity. Crucially, the game retains its ray tracing effects,

The biggest difference on Switch 2 here, lies in the stability of that lighting presentation [...] the lighting on Switch 2 has a subtle peppering of coarse noise, while Series S looks fairly faultless."

The video then goes on to compare various scenes across Series S and Switch 2, and the results are again interesting. Some scenes look a step up in quality on Microsoft's cheaper current-gen console, but then some shots appear more detailed on Switch 2. It really is a mixed bag and varies from scene-to-scene throughout the game.

That lighting stability mentioned in the quote remains a highlight on Series S though, and most other changes require a more close inspection to spot the differences. We reckon similarities between these two consoles will keep cropping up in the coming years, and it's going to be an interesting generation for third parties on Nintendo. We hope that Switch 2's comparable nature to Series S makes it a simpler process for Microsoft to move its games over!
