Yesterday, the folks at Digital Foundry decided to take a look at a game called "Anti-Gravity Racing WipEout" on the Xbox Store, which is actually just a port of both WipEout 1 and WipEout 3 for the PS1 - and it's now been removed.
In their analysis, Digital Foundry highlighted why they didn't suggest buying it, with reasons including its 30FPS frame rate, some graphical issues, the fact that it wasn't recommended for Xbox One at all, and various other things.
"Yes, WipEout is indeed available on Xbox but I don't think this is the way to enjoy it. It basically feels like a generic emulation experience and all of the changes are for the worse."
Since their report went live, the Xbox Store page for Anti-Gravity Racing WipEout now says it can't be found, clearly showing that Microsoft has taken action to remove the game from the store.
However, if you look back at previous mentions of this game over the past few months, it seems to have survived since around April, and there was apparently another version called "XL" that was on the Xbox Store earlier in the year.
The end has now arrived for Anti-Gravity Racing WipEout on Xbox, anyway, and there's little chance of an official port due to Sony owning the IP - but it might make its way to something like Antstream Arcade in the future instead.
DF also poses the idea of a "Phantom Edition" style port for modern platforms - which we'll leave you with below.
"What I'd really like to see, though, is something a bit more robust. Something like this. WipEout has already received a reverse-engineered port of the game to PC known as Phantom Edition that uses data from the PS1 game to present a massively enhanced version of the game. Ultra-wide aspect ratios, uncapped frame-rates, improved draw distance and other enhancements are all here. It's an amazing conversion of a classic - and it relies on the user to supply the PS1 game data, so it's perfectly legal. The budget necessary to pull this off shouldn't be prohibitive and this sort of release of classic games would be a big deal."
