Sorry to be the bearer of yet more bad news, but it's come out today that Oblivion Remastered developer Virtuos has been hit by some pretty strong layoffs - as employees across Asia and Europe are affected.
Following reports earlier in the day, Eurogamer managed to get an official response from the studio, which confirms that 7% of staff have been affected by these cuts. We'll throw the team's statement on the matter down below:
"We are grateful for the contributions of those impacted. We are providing separation packages, career transition assistance, and opportunities for redeployment across our global network where possible. The company's immediate focus is on managing this transition with care, transparency, and respect,"
"We will continue to invest in global delivery, technical excellence, and creative collaboration, ensuring that Virtuos remains the partner of choice for the world’s leading game creators,
We thank our teams, partners, and peers for their continued support as Virtuos adapts to lead the future of game development."
While Virtuos did indeed lead development on Bethesda's Oblivion Remastered — which launched back in April — "fewer than 10" workers were let go from that French team. 70 roles in other European offices were cut, while around 200 jobs were lost in the Asia region.
Virtuos is a pretty large studio, which partners on other games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta remake; projects which in some way will have been affected by today's news. We wish anyone who has lost their job the best and hope they all land on their feet ASAP.
