'Xbox Edition' Meta Quest VR Headset Leaks Ahead Of Rumoured Release Next Week

I forgot about that... Wonder if box will put the VR games on it (or just on PC gamepass)

Probably would have been a more interesting thing if conceived now with Xbox's multi device approach.

As an epileptic, I wouldn't be stupid enough to even try VR, but I am curious - what exactly can you do with Xbox and VR? Is it like hololens? Where you can make a big TV in front of your eyes and play all your games?

Yeahhhh, see, even if I was able to play VR (and I'd love to) that just sounds like a lot of legwork to play VR supported games. Not only that, but I'm rocking a 4GB Ram laptop that's older than my Xbox One 😅

So old in fact, I no longer get windows updates...

Either way I'm glad to see Xbox branching out. Handhelds and VR, whatever next?

@Kaloudz i have the meta quest 3 there are few ways: when i connect it by cable to the pc there is vr mod for all unreal games to became 3d or full vr, i prefer to use the normal joypad;
Using the xbox app you can stream the games and in game pass there are few that support the vr mode but i ve never try it, all the others it s like to watch a projection of the game.
I found out for 15 dollars you can buy a streaming card that help to connect the xbox to the vr so i use it like monitor when tv or projector are busy

Gamepass on the quest 3 is pretty good.

It weird how much I like playing non vr games with a vr headset. I am way less distracted with the headset on. Just like the ROG Ally, I'm not really interested in an xbox branded version of something I already have though.

Skyrim vr is still my favorite vr experience.

Shadow drops are cool for $30 games. Feel like they're not doing a good job communicating exactly what we are getting or what to expect. I am guessing it's just licensing the brand to anyone that has hardware at this point. Meta, Oculus, ASUS, PlayStation, etc. VR is cool but feel like it will remain niche for a long time. All the more power to people that do like to experience it

I think this is a great addition for those that want it. More choice is always good. As someone that can suffer terrible motion sickness just by playing normal games, I don't think this will be for me, though I could be convinced otherwise if the games were there to make it worthwhile. Something like Resident Evil: Requiem, for example, in VR, could be very tempting.

I think what is interesting is that again we see Microsoft working with an outside company to bring new tech to the Xbox stable (albeit that just as with the handheld, it is just a standard Meta VR headset but with am Xbox logo slapped on the front!).

This may go further to what I was speaking about earlier, with the possibility that the next Xbox PC/Console will be made by some company other than Microsoft. Personally, I don't like the idea, but I do see the real possibilities of it happening...

So it’s a meta quest with the words Xbox on the package and some gamepass gift card thrown in. Reminds me of that Portlandia sketch where they go into a store, stencil a silhouette of a bird on different items and claim it makes them ‘art’

Terrible idea. VR headsets just haven't taken off and for good reason: they're awful, play restrictive amounts of games and induce motion sickness in most users.

If the tech was good it would have been mainstream by now

@Kilamanjaro I view this the same way I do the adias sneakers. It's brand collaboration with a breadth of products to expand brand recognition. This is good marketing wise. Really Xbox should be doing more of this. This isn't a full OEM that Microsoft has worked a lot on to build the software for. Nor is it a made for Xbox accessory. It's a gimmick shoe (in this case headset) with some Xbox design, so that more people will recognize the Xbox brand. There will be a post and that's about it. Really, I'm surprised they haven't collaborated with LG or Samsung for a limited edition Xbox designed green TV.

@WildConcept6 my LG actually says "This is an Xbox" now when I hover over the game icon lol

I feel like they diminish their brand quality doing it, I know it is a great marketing strategy & they're making lots of cash. They're not really focused on games as much as I'd like them to be. I think they'll get rid of Xbox and pivot to MS Game Studios while retaining the X for the branding.

I've got a Quest 3 but streaming Xbox games from the cloud is pretty low on the list of things I'd use it for and if this doesn't actually come with VR controllers, then I think its a pretty ridiculous product

This new tactic of taking pre existing products and branding them with Xbox logos is so quintessentially Microsoft. Why create something new or contribute meaningfully to the tech landscape when you can just buy the right to take credit for it and use it to drag people into your subscription service. Leeches

I bought a metaquest 3 not so long ago. It is a game changer, Playing half life alyx is a truly magnificent experience. I wonder if Gamepass will start offering VR games now.

@themightyant I wasn't questioning if they'd sold 20 millions units or not, just stating that I think they're awful and have no mass market appeal (a failed experiment if you will, PSVR certainly hasn't lit up the world.) There are only two things in this world that give me motion sickness, and that's VR headsets and the Irish Sea in winter.

@Kaloudz Hmm... I would be willing to say VR games that are real life environmental explorations such as SubSide would be safe. You're literally just diving underwater. Nothing like a Resident Evil or BeatSaber

@PushButtons I'm still annoyed they didn't make psvr2 backwards compatible. That was the sole reason I switched to a different vr platform.

It makes good business sense for a Software company to add its name to other hardware products and customize software where needed. They still will make consoles for the hardcore Xbox players and Xbox fans with new features and innovation but can save money on the expensive but not very profitable VR and PC handheld markets.

@PushButtons Totally appreciate the kind thoughts buddy, but, I think it has something to do with it (the screen) being so close to the eyes. I've flatlined a few times through my seizures so I tend to play very, very safe 😅

Zero point of this existing besides a conduit to ..streaming GamePass games. This is gonna be worse than the Xbox Ally doesn't play Xbox console games announcement.

I feel like Xbox is REALLY late to the VR scene. It seems like that has been really winding down lately, with most people who were interested having tried it out already and only the real VR enthusiasts really being fans of it. Like are they really going to release a bunch of VR games on Xbox now hoping this suddenly becomes a big hit?

@Kaloudz just for into, the streaming card I was talking before it can be used also from xbox to laptop, you can use an old laptop as monitor, I had issues with sound (from xbox to laptop, laptop won't reproduce xbox sound) so i use the xbox headphone. Maybe the card I bought was really cheap, if interest you, i send you more info

@Kaloudz Wow. Did you experience VR heaven? JK. If I was to describe a great VR experience, the only time you see the screen is when you put on the headset. Once the screen changes to VR your brain is no longer aware of the headset and screen, but thinks it's in a real world wide open space. I know you will not but if you were to try VR, let someone who's very experienced in VR set it up, put the headset on, stand in one spot, and just look around. Good luck

@PushButtons No. No VR heaven for me 😅 Just sore ribs and lack of consciousness for a week, but no VR afterlife haha. I appreciate the kindness bud but I'm not sure epilepsy cares what the brain perceives. My docs always told me to steer clear.

I really don't understand why people are getting so offended by this. It's an Xbox branded Quest 3S designed to highlight the fact you can play Xbox games on Quest.

@Coletrain Ha I know what you mean re the Irish Sea. Choppy is an understatement! Don't write off VR altogether, I was unimpressed at first with a two week PSVR trial then got proper motion sickness with a two week PSVR 2 trial. I've now owned a Quest 3 for 18 months and between that and PCVR, I'm a convert. Almost all VR games now have excellent accessibility options so I use snap turning which has completely eliminated motion sickness for me, even with smooth locomotion and in relatively frantic games. I guess it's not a guarantee for everyone but some of the best experiences I've had in 40 years of gaming are in VR.

@16BitHero what sort of stuff are we talking here mate? I think I've seen about 2-3 games where things are unanimously positive in reviews i.e. good game, no motion sickness etc.

I think VR could and should be bigger but Meta is the only company really pushing the envelope from a marketing perspective. Nonetheless, I think it's here to stay and the headsets/glasses tech will only get better. For now it's been a great investment for a huge gaming nerd like me.

Cannot understand any negative comments. This simply gives more choices and is actually pretty cool that it comes with an Xbox controller, which makes the VR headset essentially a gaming system for Xbox in addition to an amazing VR experience. People were so jaded today. They don’t feel good unless they’re complaining about something.

Steam VR i have 1 and quest 3 and the sub i dip in now and then but it's more the kids that use it for fun got to have the tech ALL of it 🤣 need not so much.

I mean sure... But what about Mixed Reality headsets? What happened to those? Also why not just get a Heads Up Display instead. I've seen Sony ones from the 2000s even. Could just do that instead, it would maybe be cheaper too.

VR games aren't appealing to people unless certain ways anyway so will it change much?

That's been clear for years now. I have more an open mind to VR and have potential hope for it but even I barely use it because of how devs treat it, they refuse to learn how to make games in it appropriately of motion or controller use, their mentality is just sad.

Gamers expectations are set in stone like many adults do besides those with more open eyes ideas that are like a few percent maybe 1%, so is much going to happen? I don't know.

I bought the original Vive back in the day, and I eventually upgraded to the Quest 2. There is some fun to be had with this tech, but I'm just not that excited about VR these days.

A lot of games are "neat" when I boot them up the first time, but just get uninteresting fast and I never return to them. BeatSaber is the only exception, and as fun as that can be, it's hardly something that'll make me upgrade.

And honestly, Meta is a corporation I generally want as little to do with as I can.

@16BitHero so id heard good things about the first 3, but you need a good PC to play some stuff like half life alyx right?

@Coletrain 6 of that initial list require a PC including two with sequels. I think the Quests standalone offerings are worthwhile for anyone without a PC looking to get into VR but I'd thoroughly recommend a 512gb headset as I'm constantly managing my meager 128gb. Maybe it'll reel you in someday!

Funny that it took this long for a Xbox branded Quest. Facebook/Meta/Oculus collaboration with Microsoft/Xbox goes all the way back to the original Rift. They use ship Xbox One controller with original Rift before they had introduced their own controllers that also borrowed a couple designs elements from Xbox.
