Two More Xbox First-Party Games Are Getting 'Code In A Box' Physical Releases In 2025

There's been some controversy about Microsoft's decision to move to $80 game releases with The Outer Worlds 2, and things are getting even more controversial with the way Xbox is handling its physical releases here in 2025.

Retail listings for both The Outer Worlds 2 and fellow Xbox Game Studios title Ninja Gaiden 4 have been spotted at Best Buy, and they're showing up as 'code in a box' releases only. Both titles display a "digital game code" tag on their physical cover art, as seen down below:

It's worth noting that this trend seemingly started earlier on, with Xbox's Avowed getting a similar download-only release for its physical steelbook edition. We're not sure if either The Outer Worlds 2 or Ninja Gaiden 4 are getting 'standard edition' retail releases - we're only seeing their premium/deluxe versions at the time of writing.

As touched on in our recent post about Xbox opening up pre-orders for its first-ever $80 game, Xbox Game Pass really does feel essential for Microsoft's first-party lineup here in 2025. Of course, the digital versions of these games (either on XGP or via standalone purchase) are Xbox Play Anywhere compatible - which Microsoft will see as a good reason to ditch discs for its Xbox Game Studios titles.
