Xbox Is Already Achieving Massive Success With Oblivion Remastered

I think this was to be expected given the acclaim of the original and the not too premium price of the new version. Happy for them all the same. This will certainly lead to more of the same (Fallout is likely next according to leaks).

Win for Xbox, win for Bethesda, a win for game pass an subscribers. Win for playstation fans, who've not had the game until now. A win for Virtuoso - I'm already more excited for Mgs 3 cos of how well they've done here. So a win for Konami too.

I hope the Fallout 3 rumours are true, @Kaloudz. I prefer Fallout to Elder Scrolls, and yet I still managed over 1000 hours in a single run in Skyrim, which was only beaten by 1100 hours for a single run in Fallout New Vegas.

I was working back when I played Fallout 3, and whilst I remember enjoying it, and I got every achievement in the game (except for finding all the iron bars, having missed one, somewhere or other), I barely remember the game now, so would be absolutely chuffed if the remaster does exist, which I think it does. According to the FTC documents, Fallout was due 2 years after Oblivion, so roll on 2027 for that then, and as I am now retired, I should have time to sink a lot more hours into it now than I did back when I first played it...

I was really puzzled by the idea of just dropping such a big game like this. The rationale never made sense in my mind. Why not promote it? But if this is successful and sells a bunch maybe this could be a new thing.

@Nintendo4Sonic I think you need to let that go, xbox is a gamepass machine now, they will hopefully fund gamepass releases from sales on PS and Nintendo, and eventually anyone looking at the sheer quantity of games on gamepass may be tempted to jump ship. I too think they should have have had one last shot with all the content they now gave in the pipeline, but maybe this new approach is better, the absolute negatively around anything xbox may now somewhat be dampened by the fact the games are coming to PS it might give them a chance to build something from the ashes of the X1 and series gen

Xbox Game Pass is not worth for me personally anymore. Xbox has a lot of sales and I'm not playing many games. Price increases have turned me off but hey! If you like it, the option is THERE which can't really be said for Nintendo and Sony. It's also on PC so if you have Ultimate there, it may very well be worth your while. I'm gonna buy this game even though it's on Game pass, at least I get a small discount but am gonna wait for physical details

@Kaloudz i wanted to share this with you, cause we have been very pro MS going multi platform. Do they not see what is happening since the ABK and Zenimax buyouts? This is an avalanche of software revenue for MS. They could sell 30-45 million consoles and still be making PS money with them at 100 million consoles. PS players are buying more MS games in 2024-2025 then Sony games. At 70 to 30 spilt MS will take that all day long and it’s not going to stop, it will be Fallout, then Elder Scrolls 6 and Gears of War and Diablo 5 and so on and so on. No way Sony can keep up software wise. Their platform is a timed exclusive box with higher cost of play. I don’t care if it sells 200 million, it’s not the better platform anymore as it was with PS4. Even tho i liked my Xbox One better. I ain’t saying People will leave PS for Xbox but what you and i have been saying on here for a while now is Xbox isn’t leaving GP and they sure as heck ain’t leaving Hardware, especially when other platforms are paying for it. MS is owning gaming software this year, sure Mario Kart will come out and do amazing, but Sony is sitting there doing what? Selling consoles? Thats like selling printers but your competition sells the ink, good luck with that.

That's an interesting observation. I always buy both consoles with each new gen but my PS5 is the least played console by a country mile when compared to previous Sony consoles (and it's not even comparable to my Series X which is my main platform).
I have finished one game on it since purchased way back with GoW Ragnarok. It's just nuts when compared with the PS4/PS3 gen😅.

Edit: As awesome as this Oblivion Remaster is, I shall be playing Claire Obscur once I've finished South of Midnight.

@Fiendish-Beaver I've never been big on Fallout and then I saw the TV show and fell in love with the show. I never went from the show to one of the games, but if they remaster one like this, I'll certainly jump in and see what it's all about. I quite like the look of the New Vegas games.

@HonestHick Absolutely. I could not have put it better myself and I think this is where a lot of folks need to see the new boundaries. We, the consumer, really only need to care about value and availability. Xbox has not been as strong as they are now since the height of the 360, and even then, they've never had a first party output that's anywhere near as impressive as it is now.

I mean christ, they've just dropped a huge new game that we on Xbox can play at no additional cost outside the sub fee - whereas other platforms need to fork out £50 to get in on the action - which is more than the cost of three months subscription fee. Within those three months we're gunna get not only Oblivion, but Tony Hawks and a titan release that goes by the name of DOOM. If you add the cost of just them three games together, it's greater than the cost of a whole year on Game Pass.

People can pant and whine all they like, but no one can argue the value of Xbox and the service they provide, and that only highlights three games in an ocean of third and first party games that come to the service, and the console. More and more pubs and devs are supporting the platform these days too, and given the bits we know about next gen, it's a massively exciting time if you ask me - and value output - the platform is unmatched. Period.

@Sol4ris that my exact situation as well. I buy all 3 consoles every gen. I have the PS5 and Series X now and all i have played on my PS5 was GOWR and ratchet and Clank rift apart. I once again don’t love the controller to buy anything 3rd party, it cost more for less when it comes to services, next to no return policy for digital purchases, i mean the older I get the more I value my time and money and I just ain’t doing nothing with PS5. I understand it sells more and has the mainstream eye on it over Series X. But i actually like using my Series X and continuing to add games to it to play. I did download Oblivion yesterday after work and didn’t get to really play much. But thanks for the reply and i hope you enjoy whatever game you dive into next.

I get your point about Microsoft raking in money by going multi-platform, @HonestHick, & @Kaloudz, but you are missing a point here; so are Sony!

Let's put it this way, if it costs Microsoft £200 million to make a game, then they have to earn that money back, and then some, before they are making a profit. So, if we exclude taxes, etc. and say that a game costs £50 (because that makes the maths easy!), then Microsoft have to sell 4 million copies of a game. However, that only works if they are selling the game on a platform where they are taking 100% of the receipts from those 4 million sales.

So, if they are only getting 70% of the money, with a third of the sales on are on the PlayStation, and a third of the sales of are on Steam, then just to break even they have to sell 5.7 million units, which will account for £285 million in sales. So, let's just say that Microsoft do sell 5.7 million copies of the game, in terms of sheer profit, before taxes on those sales, then Sony will have made £42.5 million, Steam will have made £42.5 million, and Microsoft will have made absolutely nothing, all they would have done is cover the cost of making the game (and that's without having paid taxes). And, bear in mind, that the probabilities are that Microsoft will not sell a third of the games on the Xbox, and that Game Pass is not likely to make up the difference either, but we'll roll with it.

Thus, the reality is, that before Microsoft begin 'raking it in' in comparison to their competitors, they have to sell a ridiculous amount of games, and in the meantime, Sony and Steam are indeed raking it in because they have been gifted a huge amount of money for having done absolutely nothing. And, in the case of Sony, they will use that money not to make first-party games, but to pay for third-party exclusive deals that then keeps them off the likes of Xbox. So, in many ways, going third-party will end up hurting Xbox players even more than ever in the future...

@Kaloudz Bingo my friend and thats why i was hear to tell you i see what you are saying to the naysayers on here all the time and the truth of it is they know it’s true they sometimes just want to jump on the hate train that the internet is good at throwing out there. The minute the next Xbox comes out and people have them in hand, there will be articles saying Xbox is leaving the hardware business. I mean it’s just the nature of these people. Meanwhile Xbox is laughing to the bank with every gamers money with near 40 studios cranking out games near monthly it feels like. This isn’t so much an anti PS5 comment to me, it’s more about Xbox is stronger in this strategy than people realize. You know how much money Oblivion will make on Steam and PS? A lot of money for Elder Scrolls 6 would be my guess. It’s a great time to be a Gamepass member and this service is still getting Gears of War and others come June. They are starting to flex with the studios now. The value is starting to really show. Enjoy my friend.

@Fiendish-Beaver i understand the business side that Sony makes money and i think that too is a win for the industry. Keeps another Platform holder profitable in a time where Sony can’t even get a game out the door, Concord and 12 cancelled games hurts their bottom line to go with a small profit margin. So again i sell the millions of dollars they get as a good thing. For MS they will gladly take the 70% on all platforms, 100% on there’s, plus GP revenue. So i think all platforms are pretty healthy which is what i want. I do not want a Sony only console situation. I don’t even like the controller all that well. I seen on Steam oblivion is already number 1 in sales, which we all know the PC now is the bigger money maker than all consoles combined. So they need games that PC players will purchase and they have them. Happy to see what Team Green is building here.

I get what you are saying, @HonestHick, but I think you are missing the big picture, and also the long-term consequences.

The big picture is that Sony will undoubtedly be very grateful for the money they receive from the game sales. So grateful that they will then invest that in third-party game exclusives that will then not appear on the Xbox.

What that means is that PlayStation will have more, and more, people swapping from the Xbox either this generation, or next, over to the PlayStation, which in turn means more revenue for Sony, and thus even more third-party exclusive that Xbox are deprived of, which in turn means even more Xbox gamers move over to the PlayStation, and so on, and so on, and so on.

This then means that Game Pass will, without a doubt, become unsustainable. Already Phil Spencer is distancing Microsoft from the Service. Yes, it's doing a spanking business at the moment in terms of games coming to the Service, but when the revenue thins, I don't see Game Pass as being something that Microsoft will want to continue with.

We already know that Microsoft is only vaguely interested in consoles, and that their 'everything is an Xbox' is basically a route to selling their games everywhere. My guess is that the Prime will be the last Xbox console that Microsoft invest in, and that Game Pass will be a fond memory by 2030.

Microsoft can only justify an outlay on consoles so long as Game Pass subscribers remains at 30 million or higher. Microsoft can only justify spending on bringing in third-party games to Game Pass, so long as that 30 million subscribers is present. The problem is, that there genuinely is a real question over whether you need to own an Xbox. If, like myself, you have yet to play a game on the Game Pass this year, and cannot recall when you last did, can you honestly tell me that Game Pass is right for me? Can you honestly tell me that I wouldn't be better off with a PlayStation where I will get to play all the Xbox made games, plus every exclusive that Sony has to offer? This is my point; if enough people look at their own circumstances and opt for PlayStation over Xbox, then Game Pass subscriber numbers fall, so to does Game Pass revenue, so to do the third-party exclusives that comes to the Service, and then it all comes crashing down.

It simply does not make sound business sense to prop up part of your business if it is failing...

@Fiendish-Beaver so a few things, No i can’t say if Gamepass is right for you, but i can ask you if you plan on playing any of the games it has? Cause if you look at what non PC or Xbox platforms could be wanting to play it could be more than what GP cost right now on PS they are buying up Forza, 33, Indy and Oblivion. That is more than what i paid for the year of GP. So it depends if you think that is good value or not. But over 30 million on Xbox do think that to be great value and that number in years time is likely to grow as these heavy hitters keep coming to the service. If thats right for you or not i can’t say that.

We don’t know if the next Xbox is the last or not. Heck in that time we could all be playing on cloud. Then who holds the IP’s that make money? Sony or MS?

As for Sony buying 3rd party titles, i don’t see it, i see the opposite. I see more 3rd party titles selling better by being on all platforms day 1. Even the dev teams themselves (Square) (Capcom) etc etc saying their titles are making more money on PC and Monster hunter launching on all platforms lead to it being the biggest launch in the series history. I don’t see them taking a Sony deal to be locked to a closed box. No way. So sorry but i disagree with you on that.

The only swapping i am seeing the most is console players leaving consoles and going to PC. So it’s to early to tell what the next round of console sales will look like. But one thing is for sure the younger crowd coming in is not platform loyal and the don’t love the closed expensive boxes (consoles) nearly as much as we did as kids that had no other options. So again not enough data on that claim.

My point is MS shifted to a strategy that is making money and lots of it. They are bringing back games that those studios would have not spent the money on. Which is good for all gamers. Meanwhile PS5 is hellbent on live service games which will come to PC day and date, their single player games are timed exclusives until going to PC, thats the strategy for them. I don’t see either side going away using these plans. Phil has said box is in the name of Xbox and there will be consoles as long as players play on consoles. They might even start making more Xbox’s with OEM’s. I would easily pay $1200 for a Razer Xbox with killer specs and full windows bootable. That is something Sony can’t leverage. They don’t have OEMS and windows. So it’s a little early to start saying Xbox is out of the hardware game. But one thing is for sure they are COOKING every service out there with GP. There is no reason to believe it will slow down with the June showcase around the way.

@HonestHick Hit the nail on the head. Certain facts stick in the mud - one prime fact being that MS did drop tens and tens and tens of billions to bow out... I wager more money is made from software than hardware (I actually recall hardware sells at a loss) so it makes perfect sense - and not only that, if MS can make more money from more platforms, it means even teams that create a flop or two will have more chance at staying open - given the extra revenue. I mean I could go on and on and on, but like you say, value is here, and that cannot be denied.

@Kaloudz The fact is a lot of Sony fans made claims that Gamepass would just be live service games, indies and low budget titles. They drank that kool aid for as long as they could. Now they find themselves BUYING not just playing all the games Xbox Gamepass subscribers are playing. That starts to make them think what value we are getting compared to them. Not saying they are looking to sell their PS5’s and buy a Series X. But the fact that they have to look at GP differently than what they thought is the start of GP being in the minds of all players. Thats where a service or storefront starts out winning customers over time. Just the fact they have to start doing the math alone say’s all that needs to be said. Whether one day they switch over is again anyone’s guess. But to say GP is a waste of money is straight off their rocker talk. Because of GP i am 720 some GB away from filling up my 3TB Series X, something i wouldn’t have done without GP. I am going to laugh when June showcase add’s another 3-4 games plus Ninja Gaiden to GP and those games along with all the others are top of the pre order list on PS5. Couldn't agree more mate. I also love to see Xbox games ranking highly on PS storefronts - like, after years of saying Xbox games suck. It just feels like a very toxic community sometimes, when there's absolutely zero need for it.

I remember several people saying "yes! we did it!" when the FTC batted back MS' acquisition of ABK (before they got slapped back) and I sit there and just wonder - why put that much care into what a system you clearly hate, does?

As far as I am concerned, and I have been playing Xbox since OG - this is like a golden era. It's just nonstop gaming, and nonstop hits hitting the service - both third and first party. It baffles the mind.

Because it could've meant (based off the Zenimax buyout) that Activision games would no longer come to PlayStation. Of course PlayStation fans were happy at the FTC and CMA for trying to block the deal.

That was nowhere near the same ilk. Both the potential buyout at the time, and the response. The industry, in regards to ABK, was overwhelmingly in favour of the acquisition.
