Earlier today, the eagerly-anticipated Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 went live on Xbox Game Pass, and lots of you fine folks will probably be jumping into this one over the next few days as a result. So, how is the game running on Xbox Series X and S right now? Do we have multiple performance modes to go at? Well, some early performance tests from Fuzion Xbox Testing are showing us exactly what we're looking at on Xbox consoles.
On Xbox Series X, Clair Obscur has two performance modes - one that aims for 30FPS with higher fidelity, and one that drops resolution and visual detail for smoother 60FPS playback. Both of these modes look fairly stable to our eye - although we do see some frame rate dips when cutscenes play out, particularly in the 60FPS performance mode.
Over on the less-powerful Xbox Series S console, developer Sandfall Interactive has opted for just the one 30FPS mode here. We must admit that this version looks quite a bit blurrier than its Xbox Series X counterpart in either of its modes - although the general frame rate and frame pacing looks nice and smooth overall, which is a bonus.
Of course, these videos are just an introduction to how the performance profile is looking with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on Xbox Series X|S, but it does give us a nice flavour of how the game should be looking and running on our consoles. Given the game's fairly heavy rendering techniques on Unreal Engine 5 — and the fact that Sandfall is a brand-new studio — and this is all looking pretty impressive to us.
What else is impressive is, well, the whole game to be honest. We've been playing this one ahead of launch and recently came away scoring it a 10/10 in our Pure Xbox review, which is no small feat. We'll throw links to that write-up, and a quick Expedition 33 beginners guide, down below.
