One of the most interesting announcements from today's Nintendo Direct event was that Penny's Big Breakaway was getting a surprise release immediately across all platforms, and that includes Xbox Series X and S.

If you haven't heard of this, it's the first game from the new studio "Evening Star", which is made up of a bunch of Sonic Mania developers including Sonic legend Christian Whitehead. Unlike Sonic Mania though, this is a fully 3D "kinetic" platformer in which your job is to "showcase your catalog of tricks and chain impressive combos".

You can get a feel for what this game's all about in the trailer up above, and fortunately it's not that expensive to pick up on the Xbox Store, retailing for £24.99 / $29.99. We'll keep an eye on the reviews and see how this one fares...

"Ready. Set. YO! - Join Penny & Yo-Yo in a kinetic 3D-platformer bursting with innovative gameplay! Showcase your catalog of tricks and chain impressive combos to deliver Penny & Yo-Yo's perfect breakout performance. Take the stage with this vibrant pair in Penny’s Big Breakaway."

"Burst onto the scene in the fluorescent world of Macaroon, home to this over-and-under escape! Discover your true star power in this easy-to-play, difficult-to-master challenge. Penny’s Big Breakaway is the debut title from Evening Star."
