Square Enix Is Bringing Final Fantasy 14 Online To Xbox In Spring 2024

Yeah and Square Enix CEO also stated as well that their going to partner with Microsoft in the future and whenever possible bring there games to Xbox.

Clearly not all of them, just the ones that are high profile. I mean we can still play the excellent Strangers of Paradise😅. Although Crisis Core is quite good...

Will you be able to play it only paying for the sub? Or will you need Gold/Core as well?

I hope Xbox can get a foot in the door in Japan some day. This is a good step in that direction.

I enjoy FFXIV a lot on PC, look forward to getting some easy achievements with my progressed character. Though I can't for the life of me get used to playing it on a controller. Swapping between controller and KB+M in particular is frustrating.

Bit of a tip to Xbox players wanting to get into this though, you can use a Keyboard and Mouse with it! Hook your series x to a monitor and play it like a PC game for the best experience or find a comfortable place to put them in front of your TV.

@InterceptorAlpha If it's like PlayStation you won't need gamepass core and should just be able to play it out the gate. I recommend trying the free trial first though. It basically has all the game's content up through 2019 or so pre-Shadowbringers.

@Aeula PlayStation never had MMOs and F2P games behind Plus. It was only Gold that did that (and that stopped a while back). Any MMOs will have whatever their free trials and F2P level caps are, and the rest will be hidden behind a subscription, much like on PC when you get it from the website itself. (also @InterceptorAlpha )

I'm glad to see that the comments by Yoshi-P and others, not denying it would happen, but saying it was always planned...

The fact that it's skipped XBOX One tells me that we'd not have it at all if it wasn't for the Series X|S. That, in a few months from now, I'll be able to boot my account back up after one too many dead Playstations (Their design makes falling on the floor lethal) is the greatest news ever.

@Aeula the foot in the door for microsoft in japan is minecraft. I honestly dont know if they care about the xbox in japan. Minecraft is one of japan's biggest hits and they are probably okay with selling it on the switch and pc.

@BeerIsAwesome I wouldn't say never. You can't play Elder Scrolls Online, a first party game at that, without Gold/Core, for example. Even if you own it. Whereas on PC this isn't an issue

@ValentineMeikin it probably skipped Xbox One because they threw away their devkits for the platform, their other 2 games announced for Xbox (Infinity Strash Dragon Quest, and GEX Trilogy) are releasing on everything except Xbox One.

IIRC Yoshi-P has also stated that he wants to support the PS4 version for as long as he can, so it might be about not having to worry about things becoming obsolete on the Xbox side.

It's about time, though I doubt I'll get it as I already have it for the PC (all of the expansions) and the PS (most of the expansions).

@InterceptorAlpha That's on Microsoft. Plus isn't required to play Elder Scrolls Online. In fact, the first result that comes up when you type in "Elder Scrolls Online without PS Plus" on Google is a PlayStation Blog post...from 2014.

The scariest thing about that is that ESO is almost ten years old. Dammit, now I feel old!

@ArcadeGamer1929 Either way, I have to say that it's a good idea to skip XBOX One. Short/instant load times are a godsend with anything that already needs the game to synchronise people all over the planet.

FFXIV is my most played game on PS5.
I would had always prefer to play it on Xbox, and I'll very likely be switching to the Xbox version once the expansion launches. Not likely to buy the Xbox version until then, though, unless they do a very good sale.

@ZYDIO These days, that is just a collector's item since the console versions (PS2 and 360) are no longer supported. The game is still online, but only on PC.

Final Fantasy XI was an experiment that, in various places, failed.

Final Fantasy XIV 1.0 was a dumpster fire.

@BeerIsAwesome I had ESO a couple years ago on PS4 and you needed ps plus to play. I think its only f2p games and games with a subscription service like ff14 that don't require ps plus.

ESO did plan on releasing with a monthly subscription, that is why there's mentions of it saying ps plus is not needed before it was released. But they scrapped that decision and went with only needing ps plus and xbox live only for consoles and nothing for pc. And the monthly eso subscription became optional.

@BeerIsAwesome Trouble is Plus is required for Cloud saves. You don't need any subscription for cloud saves on Xbox.

@Sifi True, you need to pay Sony for cloud saves and thus for cross-play.

@ValentineMeikin Right, the current game has nothing to do with the original release, not to mention the added expansions.

MS and XB have a lot of good momentum right now. The earlier games showcase was solid, the AKB deal is going to go through, and now Square Enix appears to be re-getting on board to XB.

MS needs to keep this going and continue after this delivering great 1st party content and fully follow the rules they are agreeing to with the AKB acquisition. I expect at some point they would need to buy another large third party publisher at some point but if they stick to this formula for the next 3-5 years then they will be more trusted to make another major third party publisher acquisition.

Microsoft, with the quiet partnership they have with SEGA/Atlus, and this very public one with SquEnix, show that the acquisition of ABK was about smacking Sony on the hand over their use of exclusivity to push them out of the market, while also making attempts to have a Japanese presence.

If this works out, I see that they'll not gain more market strength overall, but they'll stop losing momentum, and titles, to an implied release embargo.

@CutchuSlow I will put my hands up if that's the case. Though it's a bit disingenuous to suggest that one thing will happen and then later do something else. Though I imagine the Bethesda of yesterday is different to the Bethesda of today.

@Sifi @Banjo- Crossplay is not hidden behind a paywall, kinda. Games like Fortnite and Genshin Impact have crossplay and don't require Plus. One would assume that the same applies to Xbox in regards to F2P games. Regarding cloud saves, that's fair enough. Though you'd like to think that the kind of person who will be using cloud saves is a little more precious about having a service like Plus or the soon to pass Live. It's a bit of a small niche where you'd want the cloud saves but not the service. 🤷‍♂️ Either way, you can pop a USB stick in and take your saves over to someone else's house, memory card style.

@BeerIsAwesome I think the reason they scrapped the eso monthly subscription was because of xbox. I think they wanted xbox to not require xbox live. But that didn't work out, so there was a change of plans.

@CutchuSlow I guess that may possibly be the same reason as to why FF14 didn't come over for a decade. Though PR speak says it was a "security issue". Because the guys who got hacked for suing a hacker are way safer. 🙃

@BeerIsAwesome I thought it was because xbox didn't want crossplatform back then. That was why I thought it never came to xbox. When it came out on PS3 and PC, playstation strongly wanted to support crossplay. Xbox did not at the time. I'm not sure how playstation feels about crossplay now, but it felt like they've been against it a little after the PS4 launched.

@CutchuSlow I don't think Sony has ever really had an issue with it in principle. All those old PSVR1 games supported crossplay with no issues whatsoever. What I think is/was the issue was that Sony's old PSN servers were ancient tech. So ancient they didn't even support changing your PSN handle. It is a big part of why they have separated the PS4 and PS5 store from the PS3, PSP and Vita store.

I remember when Portal 2 and Counterstrike GO came out, they used Steamworks to do crossplay, though I can't name any other crossplay examples off the top of my head.

@BeerIsAwesome Cloud saves are free on Xbox, they are not free on PS, that's what we said. Cloud saves are a basic requirement for playing on different platforms, you know that.
