Update (Mon 15th Nov, 2021): Remember this?! We shared this video from YouTuber (and friend of Pure Xbox) MyRetroLife last year to celebrate the launch of the Xbox Series X|S, and it received a highly popular reception.
We're still of the opinion that it might be the best bit of Xbox-related home video footage you'll find on the web, so to celebrate Xbox's 20th anniversary today, we wanted to share it again for anyone who missed it the first time around.
MyRetroLife may have another little video to unveil for Xbox's 20th anniversary later today / this week as well, so be sure to check out (and subscribe to) his YouTube channel, and we'll share it with you over the next few days.
Original story (Wed 11th Nov, 2020): The launch of the Xbox Series X|S this week will no doubt conjure up memories of the original Xbox launch all the way back in November 2001, and YouTuber MyRetroLife and his dad actually documented this back in the day.
His video above contains the amazing footage of receiving the original Xbox on day one, booting up the console and a game (Dead or Alive 3) for the first time, and even a look at receiving the Xbox 360 a few years later.
MyRetroLife also produced a fantastic video like this for the original PlayStation a few months ago as well, so we highly recommend heading over to his YouTube channel and giving him a like and subscribe. This is great stuff.
Did this bring back memories of the original Xbox launch for you? Let us know in the comments.

I'm just mesmerized by the hair in Dead or Alive.
Brilliant!
I think we all felt the same when we powered up our Xbox for the first time. Entering the date, time, language etc while the futuristic green lights swirled in the background really felt like we were going to another place.
Not knowing what Halo was and playing Dead or Alive 3 first because it was going to be more exciting.
I've still got mine (in perfect working order) and even though it takes 2 people to lift it and the controllers are bigger than a 'series S'. Its well worth starting it up now and again.
That was so cool, so much more authentic than the countless unboxing videos we see today. Just a guy and his new Xbox.
I remember loading my og xb with my music library. Then, to my surprise, when gta san andreas radio station, started playing my downloaded music, with interruptions from the djs! MIND BLOWN!!
I got my XBox I think a year or two after release. It came with a copy of Jet Set and I think Sega GT. I remember getting the DVD kit with it (back when DVD compatibility was locked behind a dongle that plugged into a controller port, mine went in the forth port). Quickly became my favorite system, I loved the internal hard drive for game saves AND music, plus after I bought Halo it made me a huge fan of the series.
The original Xbox was truly the first next gen console. The first to have an internal HD for storage, the first to really support HD, and the first to have a real online network for a variety of games.
Let’s not forget back in those days Microsoft got the launch line up of games spot on and yet have never managed to repeat that to date.
Just look at the exclusive games I purchased day one with that console.
Halo
Project Gotham racing
Dead and alive 3
Jet set radio.
That was the best thing I’ve seen today. Impossible not to smile watching that!
@Dezzy70 To be fair, that was a transferred Dreamcast mid gen lineup shifted to Xbox. Xbox had only Halo, otherwise. The meme, lol
@TC2020 I hear Sony makes a nice display stand for it.
Hi there fellow gamers. I have really fond memories when I got mine.
I had some money saved already, but it wasn´t enough.
Then on my birthday, my Uncle and grandparents gave me more money than I needed, wich meant I could get some more games.
Naturally, I was overjoyed.
Ran as fast as I could to the first store and got my OG Xbox special Halo2 two controllers eddition, with Fable and Project Gotham Racing 2 on discs only and grabed Shenmue 2 as well.
Then went to another store to get Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive 3.
Got home, showed to my family and installed the system in our living room as they watched me play PGR and DOA, first games I played on the system.
A really good old memory that I have when most of my family members were still in this earth.
Hope everyone has a lot of fun with their brand new gaming system, whatever it is.
Great article PureXbox @FraserG. Keep up the good work.
Cheers, stay safe out there and happy gaming to us all
Project Gotham with my own bespoke playlist ripped from CDs into the Xbox... Pure joy!
I always wonder how cool it would have been to have parents friendly towards gaming growing up.
I was about 14 around the time the Xbox launched and all they were asking me is why I hadn't grown out of these kids toys yet.
@jrt87 it’s a great channel, there’s a ton of home video of this guy as a kid collecting games with his dad truly heart warming.
