In what's being described as a "leaked" figure shared in an interview that went live ahead of schedule, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, has apparently revealed the Xbox Game Pass subscriber count is now at 30 million.
In the same "Fireside Chat" with Yahoo, head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, said the subscriber count for Microsoft's gaming service was sitting at around 18 million at the start of this year.
Even if this 30 mil figure was mentioned in the interview, there's no saying it's actually where the sub count sits at right now. That would be an additional 12 million sign-ups to the service since the start of the year, which is quite a lot.
It sounds as if Phil has also laughed if off, so alternatively there could be a more official announcement of the current Xbox Game Pass subscriber count planned. If that's the case, we'll obviously let you know as soon as it arrives.
Do you think Xbox Game Pass is now at 30 million subscribers? Let us know down in the comments below.

But but gamepass is bad for business and developers dont make money .... eyeroll
CEO of Take-Two wouldn't just pull this number out of nowhere. I think it is true.
I recall reading somewhere it's over twenty million, which sounds more plausible than 30, however, that's quite a number to slip out by accident during conversation, not to mention that take 2 had GTA and Red Dead on Gamepass, so I suppose they would have an idea how many subs were accessing their game.
I reckon it's close to 30 million and Xbox are waiting to hit that milestone before announcing it officially.
Now let's talk about that blue coat he's wearing and how it looks like a shade of Sega. 😉 I jest...haha
I watched the clip. Did the CEO of take 2 say "we"???
@BrilliantBill Agreed. Publishers would need to know a ballpark number before allowing their games on the service. Still might not be accurate but I could definitely see him having the actual figure.
Two or three months back, I read the figure was at 23 million. So 30 million now would not be a huge stretch considering the obvious trajectory. However, if big Phil isn't touting a figure above the previously revealed 18 million, then the figure of 23 million I read about may be put into doubt. Personally, I cannot see the figure of 30 million having been just plucked from thin air, and so wouldn't be at all surprised if that was accurate. The only thing that raises a glimmer of doubt for me is that hitting either 25 or 30 million would be a milestone that I would have expected the Xbox bigwigs to have trumpeted. Maybe they are waiting to give the figure year on year, and so we won't know for sure what the actual number is until next January...
I don't blame it to have that amount now if true, totally deserved.
@uptownsoul It costs a $1 to try it out and discover its value. After that, if you enjoy the games, choosing to renew is an easy decision. Not to mention that it's also available for PC gamers. I also know (probably a very small minority) a few people that sign up exclusively for xcloud on their phone. They don't have a console nor a gaming capable computer.
Whether you like Gamepass or not, I do, MS have really looked ahead and are onto something with Gamepass. It’s a phenomenal service and the value for money is insane, especially compared to the main competition who are only increasing their prices.
May long it continue. I love the diversity Gamepass brings, quality indies I’d have never tried otherwise and bigger games dropping fairly regularly as well as the back catalogue. It’s crazy value.
That's a huge jump... I can imagine the uproar if true.
Interesting that Take-two CEO is praising gamepass 🤔
@uptownsoul is that a figure that you would be more happy with?
@K1LLEGAL I've come to learn Uptownsoul is a troll. Honestly I don't think anyone of us should reply to him. Haha I even agreed with him once and he still tried arguing with me. Maybe we should block him 🤔
Hold on I'm confused? Is this article saying that 30 million is just a made up number and no one actually knows what the number should be other than it was £12 million in January?
I don't get the point of this article if that's the case?
BUT if it is £30 mill will that mean the prices drop soon
Won't be long until my subscription is up and I really don't want to be paying 3 times the amount I paid for the current year so will probably wait a few years until all the new games are released before re-subscribing. Shame because I'll have a perfectly good Series X with nothing to play on it for a few years and having been Playstation for last few gens I have to say I am impressed with my Series X.
Come on Phil.....lets have some GP offers if you guys are doing so incredibly well!!
@StonyKL 18 million in January according to Xbox officially
23 million this year, according to other reports.
30 million according to the CEO of take 2the
As for the rest of your comment, I genuinely didn't understand your point about pricing.
But, as this is a Xbox centric site, it's only natural this would be a discussion after a CEO says something in relation to Xbox.
@StonyKL oooh I see what you are doing.
Wow.
You're cool
I've noticed most of the Game Pass users or who are impartial aren't surprised in the slightest.
Overall Live users (who granted may not have Gold or GP, but given it's not much use without) total 64 million at the last update, so it would only take under half of those to think it's a better deal that just Gold, or use the cheaper PC / console only GP or to use a trial / Gold swap deal.
I'd not be surprised if it reaches 50m within the next year or so, particularly if they introduce cloud-only and family plans - the value of the service is too good to miss for many.
There's definitely disbelief and anger from some areas who demand we wait for official figures - but then disbelieve that anyway as they think Microsoft isn't counting current users, or that everyone is on a free trial etc (despite obviously the cheap trials being time-limited yet the numbers keep going up)
But who cares? I'm getting a great deal with GP and I hope many others are / will do too, and that's enough for me - it's not like MS need us to worry about their profitability lol
@StonyKL Just wait for Black Friday - Amazon normally have decent offers on memberships (both GP and PS Plus).
I imagine after my All Access runs out I'll go the monthly payment for now and top up with the cards when they're on offer - £14.99 is still a steal for the hours I get out of it each month compared to £13.99 for my Netflix 4K
Whilst it may of been at 18m in January, they announced the service hit 23m as of 20th April 2021. Therefore it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to believe that Game Pass could be at 30m already - maybe even a conservative guesstimate...
Knowing that a year ago (Sept 2020), there was around 15m, up from over 10m that was announced in April the same year, I too would think that over 30m are now Game Pass Subscribers based on the 'growth' shown by these.
It may not be some 'leaked' number but more an educated assumption of where Game Pass 'could' be. Looking at the numbers, its very easy to project where Game Pass subscriber numbers 'could' be. I guess we will see if/when official numbers are released...
@FriendlyOctopus ha! I've never been cool but you're use of that word make me think you're about the same age as me 🤣
@Widey85 good shout on Black Friday. I managed to get a year for £50 last time but doubt I'll get anything like that again. GP is incredible value if its all you spend on games but to do so would be to miss out on most of the best games so I see it as more of a supplement than anything else, which at £50 a year I'd pay every year. Similar to how I see Netflix. If all you watched was Netflix you'd miss out on a lot of great movies / tv.
I guess I'm hoping the more subscriptions GP gets the less they need to charge to bring in the income to pay for all those games, but I'd be surprised if that was the direction MS planned to go down.
Oh no! $300-450 million a month, how unsustainable 😂 I guess they'll have to eat scraps to get by
Probably 30 million subscribers altogether but not 30 million current subscribers
That £1 trial and other promotions have been the main factor in that number aswell, the real stats is how well it does after those trials and how many people actually carry on using it
Would also like to see the figures of what percentage are on mobile as the mobile market is in the hundreds of millions so should bring more subscribers
@StonyKL It's definitely not all I spend on games lol - but it has definitely helped me play games I was unsure about / genres I might have not been tempted to try otherwise.
I still buy the big games if they review well, and if I really like a GP game I'll buy it anyway - but it has saved me serious money on games I thought I'd like but turns out I don't (wish it had Cyberpunk and AC Valhalla on it and saved me wasting money on those)
18 million subscribers/ concurrent or not is extremely impressive and it's probably a lot closer to the 30 million now. I am a very happy subscriber especially with the recent announcements!
@StonyKL I meant it. You're as cool as they come. Too cool maybe. Too cool...
@UltimateOtaku91 The numbers a CEO like that would be told when negotiating to put games on it have to be active subscribers - as they do in the annual earnings calls. Otherwise it's fraud.
But yes we don't know how many are using trials, but given they're time limited and the numbers keep rising I doubt they're a big a percentage as many think.
I've no doubt many might be on stacked Gold deals etc but from the numbers it would appear its retention rate is pretty good (and from anecdotal evidence too).
I agree mobile is a massive market and they're meant to be looking at plans for just that now it's officially next-gen and out of Beta - at the moment I'd imagine few are but yes it really does give huge room for expansion
Removed - excessive images/videos; user is banned
@DanielDavis Relax.
Microsoft has an earnings release on October 26th, so we should all know something concrete soon enough.
The numbers will fluctuate due to people having gamepass through trials or subscribing for a month for £1 then cancelling subscription before they're charged £10.99
@FriendlyOctopus I'm interested to know who else you think is a troll on this site.
OT: I think 30m or thereabouts could be true, between all-in, the free trials through other service (hardware even I believe) and the $1 deal. If you look at the amount of people who've got ps plus and how they're constantly nagging about it I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be accurate.
@Cherip-the-Ripper Okay..
Genuinely, anyone who just wants to argue even when you agree with them is a troll.
When I say "oooh I get it" it's in Jest, mostly.
Why am I defending myself to you? hahaha Don't like it just block me.
Silly Billy
I don't think it's a surprising or unrealistic number. If it was 18M in January, when Xbox was basically still emerging from being deader than a doornail with a just-launched not in stock console that finally put them back in the game, and cloud streaming was brand new/beta with Game Pass as a principal selling point, doubling the number since January shouldn't be even slightly surprising. If they number weren't around there I'd be surprised, honestly.
Wouldn't surprise me if they wait until January to officially announce the new sub numbers once they've had AoE 4, FH5 and Halo Infinite to take into account.
Plus they've got xCloud in Japan now, which could be huge for them going forward.
@blinx01 I'm so much hoping xCloud takes off big in Japan. If it does, the Japanese games might start flowing more.
Though PS Now was designed primarily for Japan and never really went anywhere there.
@NEStalgia
I think xCloud could be the way in for Xbox in Japan.
The market is mostly dominated by mobile games and Switch these days, so with the great internet infrastructure they have, it has the potential at least.
MS just need to ensure they keep a steady supply of Japanese games coming to Game Pass with xCloud support and ideally touch controls.
