Far Cry 6 finally received its new release date of October 7 alongside a worldwide gameplay reveal yesterday, and following the event, lead gameplay designer David Grivel told VGC that the team felt it was very important for the game to launch on Xbox One, in addition to next-gen consoles such as Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Asked about the last-gen version, Grivel noted that all versions of the game are "running fine" right now, and while the Series X version will run at 4K, 60fps, that doesn’t mean that the previous generation has been "abandoned."
"I test it on kits at the company and I can definitely see that as a great thing on the new generation, but that doesn’t mean that the previous generation is abandoned in any way.
We’re really, really cautious about that, so we’ll show more detail and more info very soon. But yeah, we’ll care about all the platforms, both old gen, new gen and even PC, Stadia, Luna and all of that."
Grivel also mentioned during the interview that the team aims to target "maximum quality" on each respective platform, and while details on specs are not being shared for now, footage will be shown over the coming months.
Far Cry 6 is available right now for pre-order on the Microsoft Store if you're interested, with Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions available, along with a special Collector's Edition over at the Ubisoft website.

I think they should release it on Xbox One & PS4, for the simple reason next-gen consoles are still very hard to come by, and this is expected to be the case until 2022. Although I have a Series X, I’ve been unable to get a PS5 - 6 months after launch!
This game has been in development before any dev kits for the current gen existed no? Current gen only games will be more common soon but stuff that was in the pipeline already won't be next gen only unless they just don't release the previous gen version's that the do have available. With the chip shortage expected to run into 2022 even i don't see this being an issue on Xbox. They say up to 2 year's support for last gen right?
That sounds really noble but they did it because of money lol. No reason to beat around the bush.
What @Redd214 says.
This isn’t about anything other than money.
It’s why first party exclusives are needed to make a new generation launch and be exiting - this gen both Sony and MS have left us with sparse offerings and sparse in the near future even though both have aggressively bought up devs.
Hopefully it will pick up.
@Krzzystuff They initially said that every Xbox Game Studios Series X|S game released in the first year or two of the Series X|S would release on XB1. Recent events like Game Awards 2020 and July 2020 Xbox Showcase suggest they may have backtracked on that though I guess we'll get a definitive answer at E3 2021.
Well yeah its because of the money
Sony also showed off Horizon 2 recently, and it's surprising how none of these other games have been held back by last gen versions.
@Nightcrawler71 ill agree on ps5 but i have personally been able to find with no real issue series x and S in my area personally have nabbed 5 series x 2 for me and the other 3 were for family who wanted em. but im also a little lucky i live in jersey and I’m dead smack in the middle between philly and NYC so finding one hasn’t been a issue…
I don't see why it's a such a surprise that devs are still planning on releasing their games on the last gen consoles. It's always been that way for a year or so after release. I think it's a smart move especially during these times when the new gen consoles aren't exactly readily available either due to the pandemic and scalpers.
All about the install base and money.
You cannot blame any company for doing cross generation at the minute, especially with new generation shortages. Though both Series x and PS5 have sold more so far to date than than the generation before at this stage.
We always get cross generation for the release year and first year after, then it slowly disappears.
The only thing I will gripe about I thought Microsoft would have had say 2 new AAA generation games just for series S/X this year, to show the machine off and get consoles sold and something great for game pass.
It would definitely help series s sales as that model is not selling that well already in the UK.
Even Sony know this with Returnal and Ratchet and Clank PS5 only.
@Grumblevolcano was it every XGS game or just that they would support last gen for up to 2 year's? I thought it was the latter so that would mean some would be next gen only?
@Grumblevolcano the only thing close to a “backtrack” would be Flight Simulator. Everything they abounded in those shows that was specific for Series X|S are simply titles that no one should expect to arrive until late 2022 at the earliest.
It’s built on the old engine so I don’t see why not, it’s not like it’s a brand new engine developed around the ssd or much faster cpus
Sell the game for current-gen consoles, that amount to 20m units, max. Or sell it cross-gen, that is 200m+ units? Hmmm, decisions, decisions.
Ubi: we care about last-gen and the people.....and their monies.
At the end of the day, the game is also released on PC which has a min spec, so I'm sure the Xbox One version will be fine at 900p 30FPS or there abouts.
Much larger install base of 115m+ on PS4 and 50m+ on Xbox One vs probably a tiny number of next gen consoles.
Yes, the install base of next Gen is not enough to justify exclusive.
The cross-gen debate is, for this particular generation, a different matter than it used to be.
Cause it's all about stocks. Really, it is.
How can we move to the next generation, if the customers are not allowed to do it, even if they have the will and the money to ?
I'm considering particulary fortunate, right now, for having managed to secure a Series X from day one. But it took me a lot of efforts to do it (I had to go waiting in front of my local store, at the early morning, the day the reservations began. Had to take a day off at work, just for that). And luck (cause some guys who were with me in the line, that day, didn't get their console right away).
And now, when I talk to some family, or some friends, to tell them how amazed by the console I am... This fellows just can't manage to find one, if they want to. It' like "It's really great, man, you should definitely consider buying a Series X" and "Yeah, you're right, I want to... but I can't, so, anyway..."
All of this situation is beyond ridiculous, at this time. We all know what's happening, pandemic and all, particular component which is extremely difficult to produce and thereby the console itself, but still.
Playstation and Xbox launched a great product, and can't manage to satisfy the demands. And I have a feeling that it will be exactly the same with the new Switch that is coming by the end of the year.
This stock problem has to stop, now. And THEN, we will be able to move on from cross-gen titles.
By the way, I'm totally sold by this trailer ! Games looks magnificient and very, very fun !
Doesn't look that bad but as always and as a new gen haver, thanks to covid for everything, especially for console buy-problems.
Given the situation with both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, I find their decision to make a Xbox One/PlayStation 4 version of the game fully reasonable. Of course I’d prefer if they had made it only for next-gen consoles but that’s solely because I personally own both systems.
@Tharsman Flight Sim is the only current one, I'm just taking into account possible E3 announcements that may be Series X|S only.
Backtracking on XB1 release is fantastic if it means the product is better quality in the end.
