Gearbox Shuts Down Borderlands Spin-Off Rumours, But Has 'Amazing' Stuff In The Works

There have been various reports that a Borderlands spin-off is currently in the works, but Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, has shut down those rumours. But all is not lost, as Pitchford has said the studio is working on "the big one."

The original report comes from Gamereactor, who claimed a spin-off is in the works which will "deliver something different". Industry insider Jeff Grubb also mentioned the title in his latest episode of The Game Mess Show, and that he'd heard rumours Gearbox was assisting in its development. While he said he hasn't "confirmed that game for sure", he also added he has "heard about that too", and that he believes it will be shown at E3.

But it appears those rumours have been dispelled by Pitchford, who made a short statement on Twitter. He said that these rumours are "NOT accurate", and that "Gearbox is [the] lead dev of any future games in the Borderlands franchise (or any Borderlands adjacent games) with no co-development."

While the rumours of Gearbox assisting in development are claimed not to be true, Pitchford didn't outright say that the game didn't exist. But he did shortly come forward again to share some more news that Gearbox has "some amazing stuff" in the works. It's said that the title the studio is working on is "the big one" - reportedly a common description used for Borderlands 3 during its development.

Whether we'll hear anything at E3 remains to be seen, but it seems there's at least one Borderlands project in the works. Post-launch content for Borderlands 3 is still going strong. Just recently we had the Director's Cut, which added new content, as well as a ton of behind the scenes stuff. It will be interesting to see where the franchise goes from here.
