There's a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming release of Microsoft Flight Simulator for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S over the next few months, and the game has just dramatically reduced its file size on PC.
Originally requiring a file size of a whopping 170GB+ (and that's not including DLC!), Asobo Studio has "performed some optimisation for the initial full download" so that it's now just 83GB, which seems to bode well for the Xbox release.
The latest release notes also mention Xbox a couple of times in the "documentation section", highlighting that the "latest info & best practices to port content on Xbox" has been compiled for add-on creators, and "a page with samples to illustrate model optimization has been added specifically for the Xbox."
As of today, Microsoft Flight Simulator is still targeting a 'Summer 2021' release on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, but there's no specific date. We're assuming we'll hear more at E3 2021 in a couple of weeks, although the team at Asobo highlighted recently that they wouldn't talk about a release date until the time was right.
How are your hype levels for Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox right now? Let us know down below.

I think they have shifted to DirectX 12 by now, right?
Im very excited to see how this game runs on my Series S.
Finally a series s/x console exclusive,
Not my type of game but well done.
Hopefully this will bring more to come with the bigger franchises.
I want to crash into my house! Is the level of detail that high?
Can't wait for this one.
I hope they release the game during the E3 Conference. Exited to play this.
Wish Activision would bother to optimise call of duty
@PhhhCough "Your house" will be there in terms of location. Although most towns have generic house/building models of roughly accurate size to portray the buildings. My street for example, has pretty much the correct amount of houses and in the correct places, however it seems to think all our houses are 1 story, even though they are all 2 story. And the houses are typical American style, not British as you would expect for.... Britain...
Only major cities have hand-modelled buildings for the streets, and are fairly accurate to how they are in real life.
I can't wait to let the kids fly over the pyramids and other massive landmarks. Really looking forward to having some fun with this.
I can’t wait to chill out with this game. I’ve always liked flight simulators but never had a PC beefy enough to run them. Closest I’ve come is Pilotwings 64 on the Nintendo 64! 😂
I’m super excited to travel the world with this, absolutely ground breaking tech.
EDIT: and this is an impressive shrink. Was concerned with the 170+GB PC size on Series X|S’s limited SSD storage.
@Xeno_Aura that's cool, about the detail; weird, about the American style ranch houses, in Britain. I'm not looking for a 1:1 comparison. Like watchdog 2/legion, a decent-to-fair details, will do. Thanks!
Flight simulator is the reason I bought a Series X. A high end PC ain't $500. I hope the optimization is good. I'm not expecting 4K 60fps but 1440p 60fps would be nice. As someone who enjoyed the immense PS4 library last gen, it's been great catching up on Xbox using Gamepass. Brilliant service.
Really looking forward to this. Main reason I bought my X at launch. Hoping they do a surprise drop during E3!
Oh wow I might actually install it on my PC now, the massive file size is why I didn't bother originally. Still, chances are I will have a Series X before too long and I might as well just play it on that as I don't have any good flight controls anyways.
I bought this last year on PC, I’ve since sold my PC (decided to cash in ha!) and look forward to this coming to Series X. Just hope they have the thrustmaster Airbus stick working on launch, I’ve kept that ready.
I feel this game will be like when Google Street view first launched. Spend 10 mins looking for my house followed by a famous landmark, then I won't use it again until I've booked a holiday and will play it to see where I'm going.
Otherwise I'm not so sure how much 'play time' I'll get with it.
I am so, so waiting for this one. It is one of the very first reasons why I chose to grab a Series X.
I'm sure a release date will be given during E3. Maybe instant launch, just after the conference. Perfect game for summer times.
Never touched a flight sim in my life. Yet this is my most anticipated release this year. My aim is to do my honeymoon flight from Manchester airport to the Maldives. All while consuming my own body weight in food and drink like on my emirates flight. I miss normality so much. Bloody covid...
Maybe they can share their optimisation techniques with the devs on Call of Duty Cold War 😉
