There's undoubtedly a lot of excitement surrounding the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S this summer, and the team at Asobo has shared some latest progress details for those versions.
Speaking as part of the official Flight Sim SDK Q&A yesterday on Twitch, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator Jorg Neumann explained that work has been "going awesome", but the team won't be rushing it to market:
"The Xbox port has been going awesome, but we're smoothing the experience. It's no longer really on the technical side, most of the work is on the experience side to make sure everything is really great. And we're not going to release it before it's great. It's as simple as that. So therefore, as the team makes progress, and as everybody's confidence goes to green, then we'll talk about a release date. But before that, it's silly.
We are very proud of the quality of the sim, and I hope you appreciate the quality of the sim and we want to keep that. So rushing to market is not what we're doing."
Neumann also highlighted during the stream (thanks Twinfinite) that despite a recent PEGI rating for Xbox One, the focus is currently on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions for this summer. However, the team is still working on a potential Xbox One version, but they aren't entirely sure whether it'll be possible just yet.

I don't know if porting a game from pc is that much more difficult then porting a console game to pc.
I just recognise that every console game from xgs release day and date on pc too, but every pc game from xgs comes later to consoles or doesn't even come to console.
Would be interesting to know, what problems took 1 year to port it to console
@Murray When Jorg Neumann says that most of the work to be done is on the experience side and not technical, I take that to mean that the Series X version is feature complete and now they're figuring out how the game actually plays on a console. If you're developing on PC, you do so in the knowledge that everyone has a keyboard and mouse, but on Series X they're going to need to adapt the control scheme to account for far fewer input methods. That's how I read into it anyway
Oh heck yes. Can't wait. My PC cried tears of pain when I attempted to run Flight Sim when it released last year. I got a taste of it by reducing visuals (a lot), but nothing to write home about. Now to see it on my Series X on the 4k television, running as it should? Oh my.
Been looking forward to this for a while and hoping they still have ability to use Keyboard, mouse and flight stick like the PC version. Having had a go on the PC version, I'm assuming they mean the experience side to also include navigation around the menus and settings as I can see some console users coming unstuck if it's as complex.
Atleast this time we will be assured that it uses the superior DirectX 12 API on Series X|S as opposed to the bottlenecked PC launch.
I'm really looking forward to this since my PC isn't good enough to run this high-res.
I really hope my Thrustmaster HOTAS flight controller (for xbox and PC) works out of the box!
@SegataSanshiro
Then I'm really wondering why the port tooks a whole year
Curious how this will run on Series S
When it comes out, I cannot recommend enough to everyone to get the FlyByWire A32NX mod. It's a heavily modified version of the Asobo A320neo, and they've poured their heart & soul into making it so much better than the default aircraft.
@notleks_
Can you use all the mods on consoles too?
@Murray I’m not sure, but I know the FlyByWire team have separated itself from the default A320 so they can have their own independent version in the in-game store for free. Hopefully other mod creators will tag along with that idea too so the Series X version isn’t left out.
@Senua It's not too bad on PC depending on what hardware you have. I run mine on an Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB of overclocked RAM, and a heavily overclocked GTX 1060, and the lowest I get it 25fps in dense airports like London Gatwick with custom scenery. When you're up in the air, its mostly fine then as scenery starts to unload, then I get upwards of 36fps.
@Darylb88
I imagine probably dynamic 1440p resolution capped at 30FPS.
Be very surprised if it was more than that unless they've HEAVILY optimized the experience.
Yh I think that or 1080p 60fps on medium /low settings. The scalability on pc is extremely impressive. The Series S has really impressed me the last few months.
@Darylb88 Probably the same performance of the Series X, just in a lower resolution.
