Phil Spencer

We've heard time and time again how Phil Spencer wants Xbox to build its library of Japanese video games and continue to improve relations with various publishers and developers in this region.

With this in mind, VentureBeat journalist and industry insider Jeff Grubb has been informed by a "source familiar with the matter" that the Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is currently "in talks" with Microsoft about publishing his next game.

"Kojima is in talks with Microsoft about publishing his next game, according to a source familiar with the matter."

This information stems from a story about the upcoming PlayStation 5 release Abandoned - which some thought might be a secret Kojima project. Grubb has now essentially ruled this out.

He also elaborated on some comments last month - confirming the Kojima Productions' statue on Phil's shelf during an appearance on a Microsoft AI and Gaming Research Summit livestream was indeed a reference to a potential deal.

"And yes, that statue on Phil Spencer’s shelf was referencing a potential deal with the legendary developer."

What Grubb can't confirm is if Xbox has "closed the deal" - but the idea behind it is all about leveraging Japanese talent.

"I cannot confirm if Xbox closed the deal yet, but my understanding is that Kojima is the focus of a Microsoft plan to leverage Japanese talent."
