We've heard time and time again how Phil Spencer wants Xbox to build its library of Japanese video games and continue to improve relations with various publishers and developers in this region.
With this in mind, VentureBeat journalist and industry insider Jeff Grubb has been informed by a "source familiar with the matter" that the Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is currently "in talks" with Microsoft about publishing his next game.
"Kojima is in talks with Microsoft about publishing his next game, according to a source familiar with the matter."
This information stems from a story about the upcoming PlayStation 5 release Abandoned - which some thought might be a secret Kojima project. Grubb has now essentially ruled this out.
He also elaborated on some comments last month - confirming the Kojima Productions' statue on Phil's shelf during an appearance on a Microsoft AI and Gaming Research Summit livestream was indeed a reference to a potential deal.
"And yes, that statue on Phil Spencer’s shelf was referencing a potential deal with the legendary developer."
What Grubb can't confirm is if Xbox has "closed the deal" - but the idea behind it is all about leveraging Japanese talent.
"I cannot confirm if Xbox closed the deal yet, but my understanding is that Kojima is the focus of a Microsoft plan to leverage Japanese talent."
How would you feel about a Microsoft published Kojima game? Tell us down below.

This would make the internet go nuts. Personally I would skip this one (Death Stranding still creeps me out. Too weird for my taste). But this would definitely set the internet ablaze.
Makes sense
He has way more freedom and leverage as an independent developer and he's obviously very much in demand from numerous publishers as a result of being let go from Konami, and especially after Death Stranding's release where it was a marquee PS4 game
I don't think this signifies him jumping ship from Sony at all since he really only had one game with them post-Konami. He's just very in-demand talent right now as far as developers go
Should this deal go through though, It'll signify how genuine Microsoft are about getting a foothold into the Japanese market after years of that region being their Achilles' heel
Make it happen kojima is a god.
My money is on the canceled Stadia game....
Plus Kojima has shown renewed interest for PC releases. Both MGSV and DS has stellar PC ports. Developing for Xbox+PC might be ideal for him?
Excellent, with Sony seemingly ditching the Japanese market I expect more developers will move over to Xbox. Although I do find his games cut scenes too much sometimes, but Metal Gear Solid is one epic game.
What if.. Microsoft secretly made a deal with Konami for the Metal Gear license.
And Kojima can make the ending he wanted.
@Ocat lol, and it was day one Game Pass and Xbox and PC exclusive. That would drive Sony fans crazy.
Seems an odd one considering Sony lets him do what he wants. He has complete creative freedom with Sony and there's no real reason to move over that I can think of other than being paid a lot more for it and promised the same freedom.
Unless Sony weren't happy with sales of DS and have let the partnership go?
Perhaps it works better with MS as game pass means game sales don't matter anymore and developers can hide from it within the game pass ecosystem.
I just hope its better than Death Standing.
Great news. Always been a big fan of Kojima. With Sony shutting down their Japanese Studios as well it makes sense for Xbox to fill that gap, and who better than Kojima to do so.
For me Kojima stopped being good after MGS4 and I always found his next pieces of work very overrated. But still it is very interesting.
@GunValkyrie it would be. But last time when all Bethesda games went Xbox only and I was mentioning the meltdown in PushSquare a fair 2-3 people here took the liberty to point out how I am a toxic fan for celebrating this. So be careful out here😂😝
I don't like Kojima, not really. But I can still recognize that he is loved in the community. Wouldn't surprise me though, if this turns out to be true, that we see a lot of Sony fans saying "He was never that good anyway!" or the like, sort of what happened when Microsoft bought Ninja Theory.
Doesn't interest me games like Death Stranding I just don't see the appeal
2 Japanese series I absolutely adore are Project Diva and Tiny Metal.
Please Phil find a way of getting these gems onto Xbox.
People make it sound like kojima was a playstation excluisve guy 😂 he made 1 deal to make 1 game so sony aren't losing anything if this deal is true
@TheFrenchiestFry but does having kojima making a game make it a must for the Japanese Market? I mean how well did death stranding do in Japan?
Deals like this rumored one are why I bought into Xbox. MS has a huge war chest, and they can use it wherever they want.
@UltimateOtaku91
Exactly. I've always associated Kojima games as very Western focused bar Zone of the Enders.
And on a side note, if this ends up being true, I guess we can start talking about Watch Dogs Legion and Sekiro hitting Game Pass and something to do with Switch, maybe an xCloud Game Pass app on that?
As long as it is a brand new IP and not a remake or another MGS game. We need New games, not old games that are remade or reimagined.
@StonyKL
My understanding is exactly that the sales for ds were not what sony wanted /needed
Then Rumour was his next game was suppose to be a big cloud game and sony didn't want to invest in cloud tech, so he was working with stadia but as we know that isn't happening now.
If Kojima’s got a game coming to the Xbox Series, that’s a console seller for me.
@SegataSanshiro I agree, I personally am tired of the remakes. Bring on new IP's!
Just found an article from middle of last year saying "According to Famitsu boxed sales data, Death Stranding has sold 262,827 copies in Japan"
Now compared to other games "especially Nintendo" this amount is nothing especially when you consider its on a sony console and made by a Japanese producer. Compared to ghost of tushima which is made by a western developer and sold more than death stranding in just two weeks, 212,000 in its first week. Spiderman over 500k total, days gone even sold around 200k in a month.
@SegataSanshiro so if death stranding sold around 270k in Japan on the ps4 which sold millions and now his new exclusive being on xbox as an exclusive which the xbox has sold very few units in Japan I can't see it being a success or help drive hardware sales, it will be a much bigger game in the west
This would make Sony ponies absolutely end up in the mental Asylum.. Xbox is absolutely killing it this generation, Something tells me this gonna be the most successful Xbox gen ever..
P.S IN PHIL WE TRUST
@SegataSanshiro that was 270k after a 7 months.
And I agree that streaming is the way forward for xbox but I don't k ow how well recieved streaming is in Japan. Oh well we will just have to wait and find out, hopefully his new game isn't as mind boggling as his last lol
@Bmartin001 I don't think they will beat the 360 gen but after last gen I think the general player base has their doubts but xbox are killing it thus gen whilst Sony are ripping of their player base, I think this gen will still go to Sony in terms of sales but if xbox keep up their aggressive strategy then sony will end up being second best "next gen"
@SegataSanshiro well look at April for an example, you want both outriders and MLB the show on ps5 then cough up £130 or on xbox pay £10 to play them both and hundreds more other games, at the moment this early in the gen it won't have too much effect on sony but the longer the gen goes on the more and more people will realise and it will only get worse when Bethesdas games come to gamepass aswell, Sony have to do something and soon otherwise people will start going to what offers them the better value.
Last gen many considered their xbox to just be a console they play the very few exclusives on, but this gen its the opposite.
I think the appeal of bringing out your game to not only console and PC, but to mobile to via Gamepass might have Kojima interested. Rumors were he wasn't overly impressed with the Death Stranding sales on the Playstation, and had to push to get it out on PC where Sony was hesitant as it lives off it's 'exclusive' tag for it's consoles.
I'm sure Kojima is ok for money, and if not MS can back the truck up for that. Kojima is an artist and any artist would want ones work to go to as may people as possible. MS is FAR better suited to do that then anyone else.
@Arcnail These rumors are probably completely unsubstantiated because Kojima always said even before the Sony deal was announced that his next game, regardless of platform would always be slated for PC, and Sony themselves in early interviews also confirmed that the game was also coming to PC as well. It was only billed as a PlayStation exclusive whenever Sony put out promo material for it at their conferences or on their social media since it's still technically a console exclusive
The PC version of Death Stranding was always meant to happen. It wasn't a reactionary thing to how well it did on PS4
@SegataSanshiro I personally think this early on they're going to worry more about retaining the strong playerbase they accumulated on PS4, especially given a lot of the launch window stuff expands on their big PS4 first party offerings like Rift Apart, Forbidden West and God of War
I think starting next year we should be seeing more of them preparing ways to respond in a sense to the value proposition Microsoft has going for them. The Bethesda thing probably came out of nowhere for them and it was way too late in the pre-release cycle for them to be quick on how they went about things, but going forward I think they're going to shift the focus more to bringing in new players and offering their own perks for going with their hardware or services
I don't think it's a matter of if they respond to Microsoft at all but rather when and how personally.
@SegataSanshiro it's down to pure arrogance, just because they wuowd the floor with xbox last gen they automatically assumed they would do the same this gen no matter what they do, they have made mess of everything so far, the price of their console is the first sign of arrogance considering its missing a lot of features and is weaker than the series X, then the charging £70 for games, then the mess of backwards compatibilty assuming no one cares about it (I don't but still a lot of others do) and the mess of their ps5 upgrade system, they just rushed their console to get more money out of the players and to compete in time with xboxs release, like you said xbox have caught them with their pants down and now sony seem like they don't know what to do, Bethesda was a wake up call showing how serious xbox is about this gen and now the increasing amount of new third party games coming to gamepass day one plus EA access and I'd wager soon to be ubisoft plus.
Ps5 will be the xbox one of this gen but due to its popularity in brand it will sell more
On a side note, final fantasy 7 remake playstation exclusive period ends this week! Gamepass news incoming!
@SegataSanshiro
Sony's worst fear is losing Europe. Japan is Nintendoland and NA, like you said, will become Xbox country one again.
@TheFrenchiestFry When the game was announced at the Tokyo Game Show 2018, it was only announced for the PS4 so thats what I was going off of.
@Arcnail Yeah Death Stranding has actually been slated for PC since about 2014 or 2015
It was actually public knowledge the game would get a PC version before we even knew Sony was collaborating on its development and that it would be coming to PS4 at all
@Medic_Alert that would be interesting, if that becomes true then the switch becomes the best place to play. Would xbox really help Nintendo shift units?
@Medic_Alert good point, it is interesting to think that if in the future if gamepass is on pc, android, TV, Nintendo switch and on playstation (wishful thinking), would xbox just stop making consoles? As what would be the point? They could save millions in manufacturing costs, maybe that's the future they are after
