Yohei Shimbori, who has worked on the Dead or Alive series since 2004, has left Koei Tecmo after 16 years.
Shimbori announced news of his departure in a tweet, which when translated explains that as of today he has officially left the company. He managed to work on ten games in the series over the 16 years he was with the studio, with the latest release being Dead or Alive 6 in 2019. Starting out as a designer on the game, he quickly became the series' director from Dead or Alive Paradise in 2010, and continued to do so on each entry since then.
“As of today, I have left Koei Tecmo Games. I worked on Dead or Alive for 16 years, and while there were times I was pleased, there were also times I was unable to live up to expectations. I would like to take this opportunity to express my utmost gratitude to the many people who have supported and taken care of me. Thank you very much.”
We wish Shimbori all the best in his future endeavours, and congratulate him on his extensive work on the series and within the gaming industry.

Such a shame. I feel the Dead or Alive series is totally misunderstood these days.
As a fighting game, it feels like the spiritual successor of Virtua Fighter. The ability to counter mid combo makes it really fun and in my view it's one of the best fighting game franchises around. Lots of people can't get over the admittedly excessive "fan service" but it always amuses me how Mortal Kombat gets a pass for it's violence when the core gameplay systems are not as good in my view.

I also feel that DOA is the keeper of the Virtua Fighter series' flame. Xtreme Beach Volleyball is an entirely different beast, though. 😍
