Since the Xbox Series X has launched, many gamers have grown to quickly love the updated controller. But others have also been plagued with issues, such as frequent unresponsive buttons on the peripheral.
Some players have reported problems with their controllers since launch, and with more consoles entering the fray, it seems to be a growing trend. The issue even affected us at Pure Xbox, when one of our launch day consoles had a defective D-Pad.
As the number grows, Microsoft has made a statement about the issue to The Loadout, in which they’ve assured the publication they are “actively working” on a solution.
“At Microsoft, we put all of our products through rigorous quality assurance testing and are committed to providing customers with an unparalleled gaming experience. We are aware some players may be experiencing unresponsiveness with their new Xbox Wireless Controllers and our teams are actively working on a solution. For the best experience, we encourage customers to visit Xbox Support for assistance.”
Outside of the standard controller, many Xbox users have also reported issues with the Elite version. Players have reported an array of mechanical issues, such as faulty buttons or broken parts. Microsoft has since raised the warranty from one year to two in an attempt to help combat this issue.
We haven’t ran into any issues with our new controller, so hopefully these problems aren’t massively widespread.

The worst one for me was the other day while in the middle of an online match, my batteries died. No bid deal, just throw in some new ones... Well the controller would not resync to the system. It just sat there pulsing. Tried to re-sync with the Xbox, never found the Xbox. Tried pulling batteries on controller again several times and no change. Tried plugging in the controller directly to the system with a USB-C cable, still no response with the system. Had to pull the power on my Xbox Series S, and then after the power cycle, it finally reconnected wirelessly with no issues.
But what a pain in the butt! Unfortunately this seems to happen about once every 2 - 3 weeks, and it's not always from the batteries dying. Sometimes it's random, sometimes is shortly after starting a game, and sometimes it's from turning on the system, and the controller turns on the system but never responds after that.
Anyways, I hope they solve this soon. I've started trying to do a full Restart on my Series S about once a week to try to avoid this from happening.
I've experienced this a couple times now which results in me having to power off the console..
Probably made with Joycon parts 😛
I had to send back a shock blue controller just a week ago because of an unresponsive A button. I should get my replacement (or fixed) controller on Monday. Luckily I had another controller so I could still play while they sorted it out.
I had an issue with my right trigger on the controller that came with the Series X , every time I pressed down on the trigger it jammed. I contacted Microsoft and they sent out a replacement controller.
Damn... I have a sealed controller I was not planning to open at all until my current one faced aging issues (only way to get my Series X was a bundle with an extra controller,) but now I feel I should open it and make sure it does not need replacing...
Yup. Have issues with an unresponsive A button. I registered my controller a couple days ago and about to call customer support to see what they can do. Some people said you need to send back the controller while other managed to just get a new one shipped while they kept the old one. Hope to get this resolved one way or another as this really has put a dent in my enjoyment of Series X.
I have a Black controller that came with my Series X (Nov 10th) and a Blue controller (Nov 12th) that I couldn't say no to. No issues to report. I will consider myself lucky then.
What is the problem they are talking about here? I have issues trying to turn the controller on. Sometimes It won't turn on and have to keep trying for a while. Is this it? It's a little annoying but not too major atm, so long as it doesn't get worse.
Also think I've had drift on it but not sure. Same with my DualSense. May have had drift on that on one occasion but difficult to know if it was drift or I'd drunk a bit too much that one time.
Just seems to me the latest gen of controllers are of debatable quality (esp when you include joy con in the conversation) but I've said my piece before on how plasticky the controller feels. I can hear it through my headphones which is often off putting. No chance I can play the Series X in bed without waking the Mrs!
@PeterPanana I have this issue as well. Although not sure it’s due to button responsiveness but controller disconnect issues. For me, my TV won’t pick the signal, so even when the controller does sync- I have turn everything off at the plug and plug it back in.
:/
I can't tell if they're talking about a hardware QC problem or if they're talking about a software issue such as when the Guide button just won't respond for half a dozen presses and then suddenly displays the power screen the next press which is clearly an OS issue.
I had this problem with controller that came with my Series S, the A button was completely unresponsive and I had to push it harder to work. I got a replacement but the replaced one has the same issue.... I’ve given this feedback to Microsoft but I’ve never got an answer from them.
@mousieone I guess the article and the blurb from Microsoft seem to be talking about 2 different issues, in my opinion. The blurb from Microsoft seems to me to refer to the controller disconnect issues, but this article talks about button unresponsiveness. I'm not sure which it is that we are talking about here lol. I guess my only issue is with the controller disconnect issues.
@PeterPanana I had that exact problem with my Series X controller went dead while playing Forza Horizon 3 and had to completely unplug my console and wait 30 seconds. Tried everything like you plugging it in with a usb trying to sync another controller to the Series X nothing.
I've found the series x pad to be pretty good. It's the elite series 2 that needs recalling and fixing.
The ES2 pad face buttons have a shallower profile, which means less travel in the button, and is less likely to activate the Switch underneath.
I've tested both my pads and the XSX pad can reliably activate like 95+% of the time, but the ES2, pad, if you aren't forcing it down in the dead centre of the button, is only like 20% accurate. I replaced the ES2 about 8-9 times and all had the same issue. It's horrendous for a premium £160 controller.
@StonyKL it happens when the console is already on. You get a flashing light on controller and any others you have also can't be used, wired or otherwise.
The only thing that fixes is taking cable out of back, a restart or normal full shutdown doesn't work.
I can trigger the problem by walking out of range with my wireless headset on but it happens occasionally for no apparent reason.
Let's hope they can fix it with software as it's a bit concerning it's taken this long.
Hope it’s something that can be mitigated by a firmware update, but looks like a design problem.
My shock blue controller won't power on the Xbox Series X remotely. I have to plug it in in order for it to work and sync with the Xbox.
