The latest update for the Steam Client Beta on PC is centred primarily around the Xbox Wireless Controller, bringing a selection of new features to players on the platform, particularly for certain games.
As of yesterday, the client now supports more than four controllers at once, trigger rumble in games using the Windows.Gaming.Input API, the ability to bind the new Xbox Series X 'Share' button and more.
Here's the full list of Xbox improvements that have been rolled out to the Beta client:
Steam Input
- Added a setting for extended Xbox controller support. The option can be enabled in the General Controller Setting section of your Steam settings and requires a driver installation and restarting your computer.
- Extended Xbox features include:
- Support for more than 4 Xbox controllers
- The ability to bind the Xbox Elite controller paddles in controller configurations
- The ability to bind the Xbox Series X controller share button in controller configurations
- Support for trigger rumble in games using Windows.Gaming.Input API
- Support for more than 4 Xbox controllers
These new features are still just limited to those who have opted into the Steam Client Beta for now, with the likelihood that they'll be extended to the standard version of Steam in the relatively near future.

The trigger rumble was actually the most surprising thing to me when I first got my xbox and it quickly became my favourite part about the controller (that's unique to Xbox controllers). Forza 4 felt genuinely amazing when the rumble changed as you went over different surfaces. I was kind of looking for a steering wheel for less than £100 for a while that had similar tactile feedback but couldn't ascertain if there was one so I gave up in the end!
@ralphdibny Just a shame that so few games ever use it for what it was meant to. Off the top of my head Forza and Gears Tactics are all that come to mind. Though I know there are others.
@InterceptorAlpha oh really? I guess I didn't notice if it wasn't used but noticed it in a good way if it was. I'm sure there is a list out there with supported games.
It actually led me to think about the differences in rumble between the Dualshock 4, Xbox One and the Switch's HD rumble. This obviously depends on what games you've played that take advantage of it but I think I settled on Xbox one controller being the best because it has the meaty main rumble of the DS4 with a little bit of the nuance of HD rumble. The only bad thing about the Xbox's rumble is how loud it is (same with the Switch). I like to play games with headphones in bed while my partner is sleeping because we have different sleep patterns and the only controller that won't wake her up is the Dualshock 4. So I'm somewhat limited to PS4 games (with some exceptions) when she's asleep. I don't like to turn the rumble off in games either because I feel like I'm missing some of the experience!
@ralphdibny Personally I'd like to see pure haptics in the controller. I have them in my headphones and they're a game changer for immersion. Feeling the blast from a rocket or grenade... It just hits different.
