It appears certain Xbox owners are experiencing substantial issues following the recent update to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
Over the past few days, many users have taken to forums such as Reddit to share their experiences over the past weekend, which has included multiple crashes on the game that have fully powered down the console.
The issue has also affected ourselves here at Pure Xbox - we've actually experienced the issue twice within an hour on Xbox One X - so it appears to be a fairly widespread thing.
Treyarch responded to one particular Reddit thread after the user reported that their console was completely dead. He stated that the game would crash every four to five games, before completely refusing to power back on.
A rep for the company stated:
"Generally speaking, we're investigating all crashes and across the game. We outline to contact our Player Support so that you can share details with them and they collate the feedback. My immediate recommendations are to make sure that you're using the correct version for your platform. Players have also shared that disabling Ray Tracing on XSX has helped. LMK if it does."
Whether disabling ray tracing helps the issue remains to be seen, which can be done easily within the game's options. We haven't tested the workaround ourselves just yet - after hearing that report of a bricked console, we'd much rather wait for an official patch - but at least it's a potential workaround for those desperate to dive in.
Have you had the issue happen to you? Let us know in the comments below.

I have experienced this as well. Glad it’s not just me. Hopefully they patch it soon.
My Series X has shutten down a good few times while playing Black Ops Cold War.. It's really is a strange thing..
Happened to me on release day a few times then nothing untill the patch and now it's crwshed on the campaign and multiplayer numerous times.. I have the series x version and I disabled Ray tracing and it still will crash sometimes
Soo being out of gaming for a while and generally not buying games at launch...is it normal for games to be so bugy at launch? Valhalla and legions also had a bunch of issues from what i heard. Is this new gen or just standard? I'm not planning on buying a game anytime soon cuz of gamepass backlog but when I do go to buy a game it sure sounds like i should wait a few months after launch...is that an accurate assumption?
@Krzzystuff Unfortunately, it is increasingly normal for games to be shipped with numerous bugs. Some companies are more guilty of this than others and Ubisoft(AC:Valhalla and Watch Dogs Legion) is one of those companies.
However, having bugs so severe that they crash the console is not normal. Generally, a buggy game will fail to do something it should or have the game itself crash.
I would say what people are seeing from the latest CoD is concerning and not normal.
@evan23 @Krzzystuff Yeah, a full power down from a game bug is not normal at all, and is very concerning from a console perspective. Definitely something both Microsoft and the CoD developers will need to patch.
@Krzzystuff
Unfortunately, too many games are buggy at launch & it’s ridiculous.
I'm not a COD player, but I did get one Series X total shutdown crash from Forza Horizon 4 of all things. Every day it prompts me that there's updates to the DLCs, it says it installs them, and half the time it gets kind of buggy after that until a restart of it. But one day it totally shut down the console.
I had Miles shut down the PS5 once too.
Nintendo used to remind you every 20 minutes with a popup that it's time to take a break. Not MS and Sony, they just randomly pull the plug when it's time to stop.
Huh I played Cold War for 8 hours yesterday on my Xbox One and didn't have a problem at all. This must be something with the Series X.
Have done everything they suggested even a clean instal but still hard crashes my Xbox Series X
***UPDATE***
I uninstalled the whole game and only reinstalled multiplayer, and zombies (minus dead ops arcade). I disabled ray tracing as well and I can confidently say the experience is WAY better. Played 2 hrs last night without a hitch.
This happened to me twice in 40 mins.
There's a tell when it's about to happen.
The game gets choppy and doesn't load textures properly.
Won't be playing cold war until this is fixed.
Not saying this isn't an issue but I haven't experienced this at all on my Series X and I have a good amount of hours already (but granted, they pretty much are all from zombies). The only issue I had was in a multiplayer game a lot of textures weren't loading (they were just invisible).
@Tasuki nope one x has had crashed from it, when my series x did it i started playing it on my one x that i still have for my wife.. and that had the same issue but its very random one time i play for 5 hours no issues then another time it will crash after one game
The right version????? All versions are suppose to be compatible according to the product description for series x . Greed of trying to by-pass smart delivery for extra money. I believe under consumer law people are entitled to a full refund for something that is not fit for purpose. Shocking that there is no official comment from MS or Treyarch considering how much this game has cost people. So so poor.
I have had the total shut down problem a few times it started in multiplayer it would start to lag then total shut down I uninstalled the game and made sure I installed correct version but it happened again but this time as a game was starting it shut down this is making the game unplayable I have reinstalled the game 4 times now but it still happens they need to fix this ASAP I am using the Xbox series x version I don’t want it to damage my system so I am stopping playing it and thinking of getting a refund
Glad I always hold off buying games on their initial release date. I see even changing generation, this s*** is getting worst. Fact that you even pay more for a game now is a f******* slap in the face.
The get round this issue ... don't open the game on the Xbox dashboard . Make sure all games and Apps are closed by quiting them via the managed option. Only open the game via the games library on the Xbox and make sure to use the Game tile with the XS on the tile . This will avoid the quick play feature as I have found that if a game or App is suspended while you play another can cause issues. In relation to COD Cold war I have found crashes occur in Zombies and Hardcore mode for me but I have not had any since just using the games library
Nebx, interesting one. I've gone with also disabling Ray Tracing. This is like problem shooting a PC. Exactly why I wanted a console so as to not have to do this!
Xbox one a constantly shutting down when launching cold war
This has happened to me. l play on xbox 1s. Complete shut down once in zombies and just changing calling card. Glitches are one thing this is another. Even cut scenes seem to lag.
this is not a response IMO this is we have no clue whats going wrong and we hope the community figures it out for while we go on thanksgiving break...
This just happened on Cod today, shut the xbox series x down.
New launch bugs are a pain. I thought I escaped the bug when I got about 6 days of crash free play on my series x until last Thursday's 15gb update them it hit me hard. It happens to me in any multi player mode now. I will try the ray trace idea and see but I'm also leaning to the fact of it happening when I'm playing with PC players. My last crash I turned on my Xbox One s and played which hadn't crashed once except this time and I was in the same team as my prior one on the Series X which contained a PC player as well. Maybe it's a cross play bug.
Crashing ALL the time in the big base mission. Hanging and shutting down xbox series x. Controller still light up, but have to start the console by clicking on the button on it.
This problem is also occurring the the Xbox One S. Freezing game high pitched digital sound then Xbox One S shuts down completely happened alot recently uninstalled and reinstalled the game and done Hard Reset still the same it happens after about 3/4 match at a time.
It's also happing on the Xbox One S shuts down completely happened alot recently uninstalled and reinstalled the game and happens and done full Hard Reset still the same game freezes a high pitched digital sound then Xbox One S shuts down completely.
I have had my Xbox Series X crash several times now playing Cold War. Mostly it has crashed while playing multi-player, approximately 3 crashes, but recent crash was playing campaign mode. The light on the Xbox flashes twice, then shuts off. The controller remains on and if it was vibrating when the Xbox shuts off, it will continue to vibrate. I uninstalled Cold War and then reinstalled it, that seemed to work for a short while. Hope the problem is resolved soon!
The fact in general that its buggy to the point its shutting down devices is not good. I imagine if it shuts someone's xbox down to the point of never coming back on because it burns it up.. I'm sure they wont pay for you to get a new one. Its sad actually.
@Musty its awesome isnt it.... It suck man. I'm just waiting for it to fry the xbox bro.
@NotoriousWhiz agreed man this isnt a "normal" bug considering its completely powering down your xbox. It can actually do so damage.
I’m not taking the risk to destroy a $500 next gen console with a pathetic broken unfinished game they try to push out every year I uninstalled the game and contacted Microsoft for a refund. Never again will I buy any treyarch or call of duty titles
