You're probably well aware by now that Sony held a PlayStation 5 games reveal event yesterday. You can still watch the full show here at Pure Xbox (we've also got an Xbox Series X focused roundup), and we're interested to know how you feel from an Xbox perspective following the event.
For example, how did you think the show stacked up to last month's Xbox Series X Inside Xbox event from Microsoft? Was it better? Was it worse? And now that it's over, how do you expect Microsoft to respond with its huge first-party games reveal for the Xbox Series X in July?
Furthermore, Sony announced that the PS5 will be available in two different versions - standard and digital only - meaning that the latter is likely to be priced slightly cheaper. With the rumoured Xbox Lockhart seemingly on the horizon, do you think Microsoft will now unveil it very soon?
There are lots of questions still to be answered, but for now, we just want to know how you feel from an Xbox perspective following yesterday's PS5 event. Share your thoughts in the comments!

I think any competition is going to come down to price. Both consoles are close in specs. I didn't see anything that was a must have on day one. If the details coming from spiderman are true then that's pretty insulting, horizon 2 is going to take awhile to come out, and ratchet and crank isn't enough to warrant a 400-500 purchase. For those that are more into COD, Madden, and FIFA, it's still a toss up
At first after watching I thought it was very very good.
This morning however it's looking poorer and poorer. Their Spiderman game is actually just an expanded remaster of the PS4 version. They have Deathloop and Ghostwire as times exclusives. GT7 just looks like GT5 still only prettier...
Ratchet and Clank looked very good, but overall I think it looks worse and worse. Apparently their Demon Souls remake let's you choose between FPS and resolution, that doesn't feel very next gen to me...
If Microsoft don't mess up their July announcement, show some amazing games then they can actually win this.
I always get both consoles in the end, but as for what I'm getting first, unless Microsoft screw up before launch it'll be a Series X
How do I feel? Looking forward to playing several of the games that Sony showed off. Microsoft will show several games that I want to play in July (probably) and no doubt I'll be looking forward to them, too.
As usual, both consoles will be sat in my entertainment stack on day one, because console wars are pointless and brand loyalty is hilarious to me.
#bleedgames
Feel the same as pip_muzz above.
Thought Sony would have had a top AAA in house title for release day. Instead of an add on Spider-Man game, especially after the PS4 success. This is Xbox’s to win, at least around release window time.
The whole ps5 console and controller looks terrible in my opinion. And believe the Xbox looks much better
As far as the games go, I'm pretty nonplussed, they look impressive, but not anything that bowled me over as being revolutionary, although the same could be levelled at Microsoft.
When it comes to the hardware, I'm looking at it and trying to understand why. The design is certainly unique and flamboyant, but I think they may have gone a step too far. I believe the design will polarise the community and that's not really what you want when launching a new console. I think that Microsoft's understated look will have a few going "meh", but it's not going to put you off buying it and sticking it under your telly.
I’d like to see the event in proper 4K 60fps to get a better idea of what the games will look like in real life. I’m aware the stream was capped at 1080p 30fps and I’m wondering if that’s why I feel a bit meh about what I saw.
Couple of interesting games shown, some looked like pure filler.
Not a massive fan of the look of the console, but could see myself getting the digital edition at some point to compliment the XSX.
I was exited about Spider Man: Miles Morales but now they say it’s just a remaster with extra content so... meh.
Right now the only “next gen” games I know I’ll play this holiday and early next year are Cyberpunk, Valhalla and Halo Infinite, so take a guess what my stance is.
@SuperKMx brand loyalty is indeed foolish. We all when all competitors feel they NEED to earn our attention. The best Sony PS3 first party games came out when they felt the 360 was a real competitor.
But this announcement, lacking dates and offering an “expanded remaster” as the flagship launch title sounds like Sony has gotten too comfortable being at the top.
In my opinion, the show was underwhelming (okay at best). Spiderman (PS4 expansion?), Gran Turismo 7, Horizon 2, Ratchet & Clank sequel and a PS3 remake. These are Sony's big games for PS5. It's not shocking news and nothing wrong with sequels and expansions but this is not what I was expecting but that's because how many times we've heard that Sony is a massive first-party producer. How many of these games will be ready for launch? If Horizon 2 is a launch title that's something, it should be PS5's flagship game. Like others have said, too much GTA V filler and more timed-exclusive BS.
I can't believe that the console is bigger than PS3 and Xbox One and with those Wii looks. Until yesterday, I thought Sony still had a chance to beat Series X launch but now it seems more balanced than ever, it brings me back to 360 vs. PS3 days and I think that Series X might start even stronger than PS5 and that's saying something after how PS4 wiped the floor with Xbox One and Wii U in 2013. Thing is Microsoft is not messing up like back then. Besides, Microsoft has PC and xCloud market too. Sony only has PS5 because they won't release a new Vita but they will release more games on PC. Interesting.
Every time i look at the PS5 i just see a router. i hate the design. maybe it will grow on me though.
I thought the showcase was...fine. Horizon looked exactly like i thought it would, kind of a "more Horizon" vibe there. Ratchet and Clank looked good, but the trailer was annoying (too much WHOOOOA! LOOK OUT! OH NOOOO! shouting).
the show was just fine, i wasn't as blown away as the Playstation fanboys are pretending to be lol, and it wasn't as terrible as the Xbox fanboys are pretending it was. i'm honed in on the discless version, as it will be cheaper ($399 is my guess but i would LOVE to be wrong) since i would probably only be buying the exclusives, with the Series X as my main console.
@armondo36 The Digital Edition looks better because it's symmetrical and if you look at the pictures you'll see that the stand is the same so the regular PS5 takes more space at one side of the stand. It's unsettling.
Horizon, R&C and Demon's Souls are all I needed to see. Those titles probably won't be there for launch or shortly after, but all 3 of those appeal to me more than anything Xbox have shown so far.
Hopefully Xbox can respond well in July. The bar has been raised.
@TheNewButler Then the PS5 launch lineup doesn't look very appealing this far with the only first-party game confirmed being Spiderman expansion. The announced third-party games are either timed-exclusive or not exclusive. :S
Great showing from Sony! I'm still set on getting the Series X at launch, but I'm looking forward to owning both consoles eventually.
I'm not an Xbox fan, but I'm not a specific PS fan either. In other words, I'm still not sure which one I'm going to get come Christmas. I was hoping for something to really blow me away, which didn't happen. What I did get were some interesting looking 'smaller' games and Resident Evil 8. Plus a ghastly looking console. Still an open competition to me!
Sony’s show was trash.
The Spider-Man thing alone is complete garbage. Who misleads gamers like that? Oh yea.....Sony. Completely ridiculous.
The GTA V opening was embarrassing.
We get the 397th Ratchet & Clank game. Oh boy! 🙄 And how many Gran Turismo games are we up to now? I thought Xbox was the one that just made sequels?
Speaking of sequels......Horizon 2 showed zero gameplay & doesn’t even have a release date. Great first party showing from Sony!! 😂
No price. No real details. No word on backwards compatibility. That was the most pretentious garbage I have watched in a very long time. Who designed that opening?!!
And with the news that Spider-Man is just a remaster of a PS4 game......as an Xbox fan, I am 😂.
@TheNewButler True, I got a PS4 at launch and I was playing remasters for some time: The Last of Us, Tomb Raider... I remember Sony admitting that they were selling tons of PS4 without new games.
Sony needs to deal with it's PR team.
-You had that hyped "reveal" which was just the PS5 logo (not a problem if it wasn't exactly what you'd expect it to be).
-Then we had that "deep dive" that was just a dry tech talk (which is fine but they let hype build about reveals)
-Now it's "the future of gaming" and showed a remaster of a remaster of a PS3 game, a ps4 remaster/expansion, remake of a PS3 game, a remake of a PS1 game. (not inherently bad games, just not really nailing the whole "future" messaging)
@ShaiHulud I was Nintendo-only until last generation. Although it seems that this generation has been Microsoft's worst, I've enjoyed more my Xbox One (X) than my PS4 so that has helped me decide what console will I get next, especially considering backwards compatibility and the better hardware and controller.
@Dezzy70 @pip_muzz That news regarding Spider-Man turned out to be false. Insomniac reiterated that it's a standalone game; not a sequel, but a side story set in the same world:
https://twitter.com/JamesStevenson/status/1271468426129743873
@Octane Don't blame the fake news. Blame Sony's wording. Once again.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/06/correction_spider-man_miles_morales_is_a_brand_new_standalone_ps5_game_similar_to_uncharted_lost_legacy
@Octane if that's true that's the best news I've heard since.... yesterday when it was announced. Thanks
As someone who intends to buy both the Series X and PS5, yesterdays showcase had no impact on my decision on which console to buy.
I do think that Sony had a good showing - although I do think it started and finished strong but the majority was very mixed. Yes there were a few games I wouldn't mind playing or at least finding out more - Project Athia was probably the most intriguing to me and games like GT7, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank were games that I wouldn't rush to buy on Day 1. The big game from my perspective was Horizon 2: Forbidden West - a game I would want on Day 1 and the first was one of the few games I actually have got the Platinum for.
The design of the console doesn't do it for me and I much prefer the Series X - which lets be honest is incredible 'boring' in design. I think if I saw it Horizontally first and in Black, then I perhaps may have felt differently but my initial impression was 'disappointing' and think it will age more. At the end of the day though, I buy a console because of what it enables me to play - not the branding or aesthetic of the design. I need a PS5 to play Sony's exclusives - just like I need a Series X to play MS exclusives at the 'highest' visual/performance metrics - I don't game on PC.
I am still thinking that if I can't afford to buy both at launch, I can wait for Sony to either release a Black or a Special version that is better/more acceptable to me than White or wait until H2:FW is releasing (based on the games and info to date). The 'few' exclusives that look likely to release at/around launch are not games that I would necessarily want to play day 1 and buy a console for to do so. We have only seen a few of the 3rd Party releases coming to Series X of course but Halo, Forza and whatever else MS reveal in July beats GT7, S-M:MM and R&C for me - especially as S-M:MM is a 'remaster' of Spider-Man with an 'expansion/add-on' (or whatever they call it) and I don't know that I want to buy the game again at launch - its something I may pick up later...
It seems Series X will have a big advantage at launch with thousands of games ready to play on day 1 - let alone any 'new' games it launches with and I am planning on buying Cyberpunk 2077 so get upgraded versions of existing games I should own. I don't care that I could probably play all those launch games on my X but can't play some launch games on my PS4 Pro - I would rather play the games at the 'best' settings and not miss out on Series X enhancements.
What this all means is that yesterdays PS5 show didn't do enough for me to make a case to buy it 'first' and if I have to delay purchasing any console, its going to be the PS5. I hoped that the decision would be much tougher, the line-up of games, the design etc would make my decision more difficult to decide but if anything, it made it easier for me.
Of course there is still time for things to change. I don't have to commit to buying one or both today so Sony could have something up their sleeve that makes me change my mind, MS could still do something that makes me question whether it will be the 'best' option to get day 1.
In any case, I am excited for next generation and looking forward to a new era of gaming...
@zane547
Nothing can out-do The Mattrick in terms of pretentious garbage. Lol.
I thought the presentation was decent. There were a few games that got me excited to play but I'll probably never get to. Like Returnal, and I'm worried Project Aitha will stay console exclusive.
What really tempered my expectation though was Sony's habit of announcing games way too early. So, even though the same may be true with the Xbox presentation last month, there was nothing here that made me super excited about getting a console at launch.
I'm a huge Hellblade fan though, so I'm going to give Xbox the better of the two presentations. Hellblade II's creepy pagan chanting gave me chills for days and I think I've watched the trailer about 20 times. lol.
@KelticDevil ugh, Mattrick. Made David Reeves look good.
Remember the whole “PS3 will sell 5 million at launch even without games” statement? Nothing compared to absolutely every word that came out Mattrick‘s mouth.
@ThePrettySenshi we have no Hellblade II date, but given it was the first game showcased, I feel MS will really mess up if it is not available at launch.
On release day for me the series x is starting to look more appealing than the PS5, we know we have Halo and I’m 90% sure we will get Forza 8. Additional I can plug my external SSD into the series x and have all my Xbox one games ready to play also with slight enhancements guaranteed, also my elite 2 controller and if want some more super fast series x memory buy an additional 1TB card that I know will work.
Sony on the other hand with the PS5 are being all a little quiet about additional features, my son who is a big PS4 fan boy even said Sony pulled a PR stunt with their showcase over Spider-Man, he thought he was getting a full new game, not a remaster with an added Miles adventure part. He seems a bit disappointed over that.
@BlueOcean Yeah it was poor wording on their part, thankfully they clarified it.
@pip_muzz Yeah it's true, Insomniac said it themselves! And you can't get closer to the source than that.
@Tharsman
The Mattrick was a plague that almost killed the entire Xbox brand entirely. I am sure he is somewhere enjoying his millions of $. 😡
If you look up “douchebag” in the dictionary, there would be a picture of him at his interview with G. Keighly (another piece of work, himself). Lol.
Sony's event is how Microsoft's May event should've looked like, mix in some of the big 1st party games like Halo Infinite.
@Grot I didn't like The Last of Us but not because of anything political, it doesn't talk about that (as far as I remember) but the gameplay is quite bad. Same for the Uncharted games, these are more about love, thieves and traitors but gameplay is clunky. I don't mind scripted games but the camera, controls and gameplay of Naughty Dog's games are not smooth and they are not really enjoyable. They are obsessed about impressive graphics though. That and the good voice acting are enough for winning all the awards. That's why Resident Evil is better than The Last of Us and Tomb Raider is better than Uncharted regardless of reviews.
Like @NEStalgia says, Nintendo and Microsoft pay more attention to the gaming part of games. Nintendo and Microsoft are more about gameplay and enjoyable experiences and Sony is more about controversial and gloomy interactive experiences.
Pendulum was always going to swing to Sony after this and so it should with the amount of effort the put in. If you loved Sony before, then I suspect you'll have loved last night. I know Microsoft has a lot more to come and the momentum will swing a few more times between now and Christmas.
Hearing that one of the games shown won't see the light of day until 2022 though says maybe there isn't that much available any time soon.
@Grumblevolcano ummm The May event was never going to be on the scale of Sony’s because they had that planned for July even back then. They said it wasn’t for first party games. Comparing makes no sense.
@Grot I feel the same way but with different games in mind.
@Octane
Just read cheers for the update.
Hopefully it will be better for it, I guess they wanted a big hitting game for release.
I just wanted more, like the new HZD or R&C for release date.
I'd say it was a solid showing from Sony, a varied mix of big name crowd-pleasers (both first and third party) a smaller, more experimental unknowns. Plus, they get bonus points from me for once again getting the reveals of a new Resi and new Hitman.
Sony have set the bar, now Microsoft need to raise it.
@TheNewButler Agreed, i just can't quite agree with people who were "blown away". by what? it was...fine.
@BlueOcean I've been saying this for years; it's not even a knock on Sony, but they focus on interactive storytelling to a huge degree. Days Gone has 6 HOURS worth of cutscenes. Lots of people love it, and thats great, but i just don't. My gaming time is quite limited and i don't want to spend it watching poorly acted 20 minute minimovies between 10 minute sections where i get to actually push buttons.
Anyone else notice that Sony touted this as a feature?: Demon's Souls remake will allow you to play in high-resolution mode OR high framerate mode....?
nicely marketed, but doesn't that just mean that the system can't render it in 4k60, it's probably one or the other....?
@armondo36 I agree! Sony's games are basically films. Sony's show was quite underwhelming regarding games and the part where the console is finally revealed is almost embarrassing.
Yes, I noticed that too, Demon's Souls is either performance or quality mode. Choice is great but that means that the game won't be able to run at 4K60 on PS5.
By the way, which game was announced for 2022?
The actual event was ok, but nothing that screamed for me to change my mind about not getting a Sony console for the first time ever since I only want one console this time around. I also still think the PS5's design is awful, and that's not me being a fanboy or anything. I just don't like it at all, even if I appreciate the effort to try something different.
I'll get both PS5 and Series X eventually. Still undecided which I'll get first. I think price will be the determining factor. Certainly intrigued by Sony's first party offerings (I'm also more of a PlayStation guy than anything else so there is some bias there) but we don't have MS' full first party slate or price for either. So, too early to tell.
@BlueOcean Pragmata I think it is called. The one with the girl and the Spaceman. Capcom said afterwards it will arrive in 2022.
@ChrisMcC7 Thanks. Too early to show it in my opinion.
@BlueOcean completely agree. I wouldn't mind so much if it had stated the release estimate in the video but it left me thinking what else shown wouldn't release any time soon. Nintendo sometimes go too far the other way but I far prefer their stance of showing games that are going to arrive in the next twelve months.
@ChrisMcC7 Exactly.
@Dyrual Smart delivery and backwards compatibility is the reason why at the moment, every non Sony exclusive I am buying on Xbox. Because I know for sure it will also run on the series X. The loss of sales to Sony from my end alone is noteworthy, I wonder how many other people will buy Cyberpunk on Xbox over PS for this reason alone
Sony showed a little of what Microsoft should have shown: some gameplay. Now it's up to MS to give us a decent event and show some actual gameplay and reveal a launch lineup because we don't know much about it so far
One thing that bothers me is that a stream can't reproduce the gaming quality we'll see on our TVs, so how big the jump from current to next gen will be is still a big question mark to me. Maybe (and just maybe) we got to a point in which we'll see improvements, but I don't think MS or Sony will introduce anything jaw dropping in comparison to what current machines are able to deliver. Just my ten cents and I'd love to be totally wrong
@John_Deacon Microsoft said that they will show the first-party games in July.
From the standpoint of what Sony needed to do for the initial PS5 reveal, it was great.
It had some launch stuff, a few post launch games, and the one "it'll get here when it's done" announcements. Sony copied the Direct format well.
Also, the general reaction was that people loved it. I think it solidified my point that PS consoles are generally the default choice of console each generation. It seems that way because nothing mindblowing was shown (imo), yet people acted like it was a massive win for Sony.
Now, from the standpoint of someone who isn't a PS person, everything looked nice but not enough to convince me to take the jump. It just didn't do much to convince me that PS5 and Series X will have very different libraries. I'm already set on Series X, but it seems like PS5 will "win" the upcoming generation.
@Dezzy70 If Horizon gets an early 2021 release, I'm fine with that. The consoles probably sell out during the holiday regardless of what kind of launch titles they have. I think the shortages will also play a role in this. I expect it will be hard to get one if you don't pre-order it during the first couple of months.
I was reasonably impressed, i expect the PS5 to take a different form when the PS5 slim comes out. I thought it looked a little like the phat PS3. GT7 looked mind-blowing. That was the most impressive game for me. Ya know the first batch of games are always surpassed, quality wise deeper into a consoles life. But what a starting place GT7 places itself at the beginning of the PS5's lifespan.
I'll be getting both console's as I have done for the last 3 generations.
I thought it looked like a praying mantis or a humped alien in a white coat.
