Hmmm I doubt in it's current software version if you would see Kinect: Black Ops... you have to be really responsive on a FPS and I don't think the Kinect is quite there.... would be interesting though, especially shot gun action... maybe a combination of joypad and Kinect (like Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows) would work... who knows
At this point in time I doubt it. There is so much standing in the way of creating that sort of game for Kinect. The lack of a controller would require the game to advance you, which means an extremely linear playthrough. Along with the inability to sense fingers would require unrealistic shooting actions for you to fire your weapon. Here's a look at a demo of an FPS paintball game in production: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euNOPKYFbPc When it comes down to it, the idea behind Kinect is amazing, but the possibilities are very slim without some form of controller.
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
Would some sort of light-gun work with Kinect? It would obviously be a hybrid setup and require the purchase of another device, but I'd still be ok with it. Reloading would be reaching for your side and then making the motion of slamming another clip into the weapon. Throwing grenades would be...like...well throwing grenades. Crouching would be controlled by crouching. I may even be ok with walking in place = walking in the game (but that could get hectic/tiring especially where running is concerned). It would provide a very realistic experience and a bit of a workout at the same time. Would definately separate the "men from the boys"
I don't think you could ever really do a full FPS experience without an analogue stick, but I could see compromises being made. Maybe a game that operates with perspective shifts...
For example you co do a top down perspective for general play and use your hand like a mouse to control movement but when you have a position and want more accuracy you have the option of going down to first person level or carrying on in top down.
Or maybe you could go with Resident Evil style shooting where you have to stop when you shoot. Lifting one foot off the ground will make you walk and whatever way you have the gun pointed will be your direction with maybe a quick back and forth motion with the hand making you spin right around to take on enemies behind you, then your basic crouch and lob grenade gestures.
I can't see a full FPS being made. The most compelling question would be "how would the character move?". For that reason, something like Time Crisis or even Point Blank could feasibly work, but for something along the lines of Halo or Call of Duty you would think isn't viable. That hasn't stopped developers from trying though - as can be seen by the likes of Project Draco, Haunt and Child of Eden.
The quick and easy solution for the movement issue would be what the Wii and Move already have, i.e the Nunchuck or the Motion Controller in your left hand, but ofc, presenting something like that would defeat the purpose of controller-less gaming, hence the FPS dilemma
looks really awesome. heck, I can see the gaming mechanics from a Tomb Raider game in this video. like climbing and swinging across a chasm. definitely for a slower game like an third-person RPG. but if they get it down, I can see it for a fps.
That youtube video is very impressive, moving your arms back and forth for walking is a lot less energetic than moving your legs, even though, it will still give you a pretty good workout, which is a good thing. If they can work out a good way to hold and, more importantly, fire a gun I can see a good gears game coming.... Personally I think that method will be employed for slower, third persom shooters, like mass effect and, as mentioned above, a tomb raider type of game. I think that first person shooters will be kinect enhanced, not fully enabled, to take advantage of the controllers accuracy, just doing a throwing motion for grenades instead of selecting them would give a great deal of interactivity, maybe in the gears games you could just raise the controller in your hand to activate the lancer's chainsaw. It would be a lot easier to implement that into games rather than devise a whole new way of interaction. This won't happen for a while yet, as it takes away from the kinects main market strategy, "you are the controller", but give it maybe a year and I can see that being implemented. What does everyone think?
A very specialized FPS may be possible, but would it be one you would want to play when so many good controller-based ones are available? I think some crative games on the Kinect will be available, but fast-paced FPS's may be on the outside looking in.
