Topic: Series X Deep Clean - Dust!

I received my Series X on launch day and has been used everyday, if not for gaming, as my streaming device (YouTube, Netflix etc).

I've noticed a big buildup of dust on the rear air inlets and the top fan blade. I'm able to carefully clear the areas I can access, basically anything external.

I've no concerns regarding the visible internal buildup. I'm not experiencing any issues with the device. However, I would love to give my Series X a deep clean.

Is there a safe way to do this? Has anyone done this with their device? I'm not keen on attempting to open up the device myself if it's meant to stay closed!

I just use a can of air and clean it that way, no opening up needed.

I would also try a can of air. Im not adventurous enough to take my devices apart as I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to get it back together again. You might even be able to use the hose from your vacuum cleaner and get that cleared up. If that doesn’t work, I’m sure there’s videos on YouTube that can walk you through the process of taking it apart to clean.

I’ve recently noticed a build up of dust covering most of the heat sink inside my Series X, I’ve never cleaned it since I got it 2 months after launch so it’s probably no wonder.

I was never going to take it apart for cleaning that just wasn’t an option so I went to Asda (Walmart to you in USA) and bought a 400ml can of Hama compressed air for £3.50 and it’s done the job. It’s made that much of a difference that my Series X is now as silent as the day I switched it on for the very first time. Playing certain games made my Series X sound loud, as if the fan was in overdrive, but since being cleaned playing the very same games now doesn’t make my Xbox sound louder like it used to. So I’d definitely use a can of compressed air every now and then to make sure your Xbox is running smoothly and prolong it’s lifespan that little bit further.

@MaccaMUFC Can you explain where exactly did you use the compressed air can? Rear? Top? Are you sure that you can see the heat sink from the outside? Where did you look? Thanks.

Has anyone tried a vacuum? My Series X is not too dusty yet but useful information to know.

@Banjo- I used the air can mainly on the left vent at the back of the console (left as in the back of the console facing you). If you shined a light, like the flash on a mobile phone, you’ll see this metal grated thing with lots of thin gaps.

I basically sprayed a bit at a time in other places like at the top in between the fan and the other vent at the back of console but it was that left vent were there was quiet a lot of dust built up on the metal grate thing (which I assumed was part of the heat sink) whatever it is, blowing the dust off has made my Series X very silent and playing certain games no longer makes it sound like a jet engine.

I should mention that I never pressed the spray all the way down as sometimes liquid spray came out but it always evaporated in seconds, it’s important to keep the can upright when spraying to prevent that from happening, I held onto the tube and bent the end to whichever direction I wanted to direct the spray but be careful it doesn’t fall into the Xbox itself. Also just lie the Xbox on its side and make sure you unplug the Xbox before using the compressed air can.

There is micro vacuums that you can buy but since doing the air can that does it quickly with no fuss and will only need to be done a few times a year I reckon.

Thanks, my pre-ordered Series X is still quiet but that explanation can prove useful. I have the Series X vertically, looking as you advised, I see a metal plate at the bottom with four round holes with some more holes before it on the ground, something like black plastic and a vertical circuit board on the left and nothing else...?

i would not open up my xbox if its not shutting down or seems to get low frames. imo i would trade in the dirty xbox on a brand new one. but here:

Since consoles have these huge gaps and vents, shouldn't they make them user-cleanable, allowing you to remove the top or something?
