I have an Elite Series 2 controller and generally just use it with default settings. I'm hoping to get some good use (in my limited free time) for Starfield and would like to set up a controller profile and tweak the settings a little in the app.

Does anyone have any recommendations on settings for a game like this?

Hi i use small buttons from back, p4 run, p2 jump. And have profile to game what i play, only change buttons sometimes, starfield is coming out.

Thanks. There seems a lot of variability when I've been Googling opinions, so I may ultimately just end up playing with the settings bit. Thanks for your thoughts.

@LaurenceJ1987 The whole point is that you 'customise' it to your preference. If you don't like the 'click left thumbstick' to sprint and would prefer to use a paddle instead, you can. If you are 'used' to the default layout, then it may well be best to keep the default layout.

Profiles are more like setting up the controller for 'individual' preferences - either individual users if its a shared controller or individual genres/games. For example, in a FPS game, you may prefer to use a specific paddle to jump instead of taking your thumb off the 'aiming' stick to press the A button to keep aiming whilst jumping but would prefer that paddle to do handbrake turns in Forza or use a grenade in Starfield. So you have a 'fps' Profile, a 'racing' Profile and/or 'RPG' profile for example.

If you were used to pressing 'A' for something and the game defaults to 'B' for example, you can swap the A/B position on that 'profile' for that game so you instinctively press 'A' during gaming and it performs the 'action' you expect, not whatever the default was.

I don't know which paddles you prefer - short or long so I couldn't advise on which you should allocate to what. I 'normally' allocate A,B,X,Y buttons to each with the 'two' most used (usually jump/action and reload) to the paddles I find most convenient to click (L and R side).

It still took me a while to 'learn' to use the paddles instinctively in the heat of battle because muscle memory takes time to break and retrain - especially when taking my thumb off the thumbstick to press a button had been 'instinctive' for decades I don't need to look down to know where each of the 4 buttons are - its instinctive and still 'works' - so it took quite a while to 'train' my fingers to press paddles instead and get used to exactly which finger was pressing what paddle and what that paddle was assigned to do.

A game like Starfield will be a great game to experiment with and get used to a different configuration, maybe even using the Paddles the way you want. With so much 'freedom' in the game, you can spend time in a quiet zone with little/no danger to just get used to clicking the paddles in a game to build up muscle memory - Jump around, reload, sprint whatever actions you want - generally to keep your Thumbs on the Thumbstick and fingers on the triggers in the 'heat' of battle for example easier - to make it 'easier for you to interact with the game in the most comfortable way for you, its 'your' controller and 'customisable' to suit YOU the best, not 'my' or anyone but your preferences.

I prefer a 'short' left Thumbstick for moving and the tallest Thumbstick for Aiming - which also makes it further to travel to the ABXY buttons, therefore a longer time away from being able to aim when I need to perform an action - helpful in a LOT of games - so that's why 'my' preference is to use the Paddles instead of ABXY, but you may 'prefer' to use paddles for LB/RB function or maybe click thumbstick functions - clicking a thumbstick to Sprint is a 'very' common default function but you may prefer or find it more comfortable/easier, to assign that to a paddle...

So my best suggestion to you is to look at how you use the controller, would creating a profile help you interact more comfortably, more easily in some/all games? Is there something you 'wish' was assigned differently? Could you get 'more' from it (like remaining able to aim whilst jumping and/or Sliding (or whatever other actions require a input) Would you prefer Aiming and Movement were switched over (lefties may for example). That's the whole point is that 'out of the box', in default mode, its like any other Xbox controller EVERY Xbox owner is 'familiar' with, but built 'better' in some areas and can be 'customised' to suit the preferences of the owner (if they have any or 'issues' with the default layout). I haven't messed with tension, dead zones, trigger or any of those tweaks as I never had an issue with the 'default' - if it ain't 'broke'...

Its your controller, enjoy it the way you want - and if that is sticking with 'Default' settings because you are most accustomed to that, don't want/need to use (or assign) paddles, that's fine too - its 'your' controller so Customise it to suit 'you'.

@BAMozzy Wow, thank you for the detailed reply. From my use so far I've gotten used to using the paddles. I have them as ABXY too but have changed one of X or Y to a shift key, which I use to map other buttons to take a screenshot and video grab. I've also not messed with dead zones or anything yet. I have played with the three button stages for the triggers, but tend to just prefer the standard setting for those when they press in more.

There's definitely more to play with, especially for thinks like shifting for thumbstick clicks.

I really like your idea of experimenting in a quiet area of Starfield. I guess I can see what the default mapping is for that game and then see if I want to change anything.
