Topic: Do any none-xbox controllers work on Series S/X?

Grabbed Guilty Gear Strive from GP and my goodness, the Series S controller (specifically the dpad) is hideous for fighting games. I am failing to consistently get out forward jumps, with neutral jumps coming out instead. I've tried using the stick (welp), but the deadzone and general lack of gate gives me hit and miss results.

So my question is, are there any pads from other consoles that can work on Series S/X? Preferably without a USB gadget.

@bowzoid unfortunately not but there is a wired 8bitdo pro 2 pad that is made specifically for Xbox that has a decent d pad. I won't comment on how well it will perform for the specifics you've mentioned as I am not that educated on fighting games to be honest (I only managed to whip out a Sonic Boom a few years ago after finally taking the time to try and learn Guile 😅)

If you go for it, make sure it's the wired one as the similar wireless pad is actually for android (for gamepass cloud gaming) and doesn't work on the Xbox itself. I don't think there are any (or many) actual 3rd party wireless pads available for xbox

thanks, I will check it out.

@bowzoid I cannot help you on that but I am surprised that you are having troubles with the d-pad. I do not play fighting games but for other things this is pretty much my favourite d-pad ever made (apart that is a bit too loud) and never had issues with missing inputs with it (series X but I do not see them being different)

It is great for other genres for sure. No problems there, but those diagonals for jumping forward in a fighting game are not working too good for me. I've also tried other Xbox controllers in work etc same issue.

Forgive me, without starting a war, I play fighting games using PS4/PS5 controller fine.

I'm going to pick up that new 8bitdo controller.

@bowzoid, are you saying the DS4 and 5 work and work well on current gen XBOX? I ask because I have plans of going MS this gen. My only concern is 20+ years of using Sony controllers where I can play all day without pain or cramping. That and the asymmetrical sticks placement just feels weird after years of using symmetrical Dual Shocks. DS4, even wired, compatible with a Series X would be good news to me.

@NoCode23 nah it's not, you'd have to use an adapter. I think one is called TitanOne or something and another might be made by a company called Brooks (I think), might be called CronusMax

They're both pretty pricey though and I don't have either so I can't attest to their quality.

I will say it's probably worth trying out the Xbox pad for a bit though. Trigger rumble is really nice (in all 17 or so games that actually support it 😂) but playing Forza Horizon and feeling the rumble adapting to different surfaces under the acceleration trigger actually sold me on the Xbox controller

Yeah adapter for about 40 quid or yeah an 8bitdo for same price. It's more of a functional thing than comfort. I like the Xbox series controller, it's just not got a decent dpad for fighting games in my opinion.

The Xbox Elite Controller is the best controller I have ever used but the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 is even better. I would like to use it on all consoles. The SNES controller is the best controller for 2D games, in my opinion. I'm amazed by how efficient and comfortable it still is.

I bought the Mad Catz Street Fighter V Arcade Stick Tournament Edition S+, best decision ever related to fighting video games, so I'd recommend any fighting games player to get a high-quality fighting stick like this.

I also have a Brook adapter for Xbox because my arcade stick is actually for PS4, that I also have. I ordered another Brook adapter for using the Xbox controllers on PS4 (I hate the PS4 controller) and Switch (no comments about the joy-cons). Yes, newer Brook models work for several consoles.

I haven't bought any other brand adapters so I can only recommend what I have. They get updated via firmware (manually, on a PC) for supporting additional controllers and the customer service responds.

You can check the different options here:

About compatibility, Xbox uses a proprietary wireless signal that is better and has less lag than PS and Switch Bluetooth. I use wired connections if possible but it's something to note and an advantage of Xbox and Xbox controllers.

@Banjo- Yeah, you can't beat a good fight stick for the fighters. I bought a Mayflash elite, which basically has a Brook/cronus/titan built in. All be it a limited one

@GarbonZoni Yes and I wasn't sure because I was not very good at the arcades as a kid, games like Killer Instinct 2, etc. You just need a little bit of time and they are the best choice for any fighting game on any console.

@Banjo- I used to have a Madcatz TE2 for Xbox. Great stick but it weighed a tonne because it had all the Haptic feedback stuff inside it. None of which was optimised for Xbox when they put it on sale lol. Half hour on your lap and the legs went numb

I have the Mayflash F300 Elite. I use it mainly for SFV, but I got so used to playing Strive on pad, that I will have to recondition myself on the stick. I might just do that.

@bowzoid That's the beauty of choice R'kid. Go with what works for you . I personally have always preferred an 8 way stick and big buttons over a gamepad. When I finally buy the Capcom Fighting collection, I will have 50 fighting games on my box and I can't play any of them with a pad lol. I love the Mayflash , best controller I've bought in ages. It has tremendous innards

@NoCode23 i personally use a Brook adaptor, as the Series S controller kills my hands. I use the Brook to allow me to use the DualShock 4 on the Xbox. There are other adaptors, but they are increasingly difficult to find. The Brook is great. Once every now and then, it does lose connection, but it takes a second or two to reconnect, so I personally don't think its a big deal. Better than hand pain, anyway! They are around £40, so not massively expensive. https://www.brookaccessory.com/detail/59327520/

I have a Brook adaptor for my Saturn and Dreamcast and I love it.

As far as Xbox is concerned I am not a huge fan of Series S dpad or asymmetrical sticks. I ordered the 8bitdo pro 2 controller for PC and love it. I may get the wired Xbox too.

@GarbonZoni There was no Xbox edition so I had to buy the PS4 one. Mine is also heavy and has a padded lower side but I actually like that because it doesn't move and you can use it on your lap or on other surfaces.

The Mad Catz Street Fighter V Arcade Stick Tournament Edition S+ is a bit more compact than 2. Both are Vewlix-style and Denshi design. They use Sanwa parts, used in Japanese arcade cabinets, with Sanwa OBSF-30 buttons and Sanwa JLF ball-top stick. They are more sensitive than Kuro and Seimitsu. I made this research back in the day to make sure I was getting the best one 😁.

The older 2 model doesn't have the L3 and R3 buttons, touchpad and lightbar that both S+ and 2+ have. Compared to the S+, the 2+ model can be more easily modded (without screwdriver) and has a removable cord. However, the 2+ doesn't have a dedicated cable storage compartment. This is not very important but just more information about them.

Good point about fighting games on Xbox. All Street Fighter games (but V), Capcom Fighting Collection, Killer Instinct 1, 2, Gold and 3, Mortal Kombat, Tekken... Between Xbox One and backwards compatible games, there are loads of them available on Xbox.
