Topic: Copy games to console

Ok, for starters it's Xbox series S. We currently have high speed internet. But we live in the city and it's totally not us. So, we're moving soon to a new house that is extremely rural. There is no high speed internet available there. So, is there a way to download games on a computer and then copy them to the console?

(I could either drive periodically to a public wifi and download them and bring them back and copy them to the console or download them on my smartphone since I have unlimited smartphone data.... Not unlimited hotspot data though.). What would be even cooler is if I could store the games on a NAS and pull them down to the console. I'll still have wifi and a local network at the new house. Just won't have internet access over the wifi.

Not quite sure what you are asking, but you could remotely download a game from your smartphone using the app or going to MS site and download the game that way when you get home it will be ready to play. I do that alot when I am on break at work.

@dorlow
does this article help you:

anyway yes, you can store games in an external USB 3.1 storage, but you can't play them: only with the official Seagate Expansion Card you can do that.

I live in a rural region too, in Italy and I have a WiMax connection (with antennas).
Also check for satellite connections like Starlink.
I wish you the best and enjoy the country.

Short answer, no.
You need an xbox of sorts to download xbox games and updates, then using an external harddrive or the Seagate xbox series' exter-ssd to be able to transfer them, seamlessly, from one console to another. Being able to queue the downloads on your phone, doesn't download them to your phone for transfer. Also the updating of the console, itself, needs to be done. Living in a rural area, satellite isp is your best bet, or driving into a wifi-enabled area with your console and screen, and doing it that way. Best of luck to you and yours, happy gaming!

@dorlow Games can only be downloaded to the hardware its meant for - especially now with Smart Delivery to ensure you get the 'right' version for your hardware. If you are on PC for example and opt to download the game to copy to external storage, you'd get the PC version.

External storage has to be formatted to the device so if you plug your PC formatted storage into an Xbox, then it would need to be 'reformatted' before it can be read, thus deleting anything you stored on it.

This is done for a very good reason. Consoles are a 'closed' system, unlike PC's, and they don't want you introducing 'anything' that they haven't tested and vetted 'safe' to their platform. Not saying you are intending to introduce viruses, malware or hacking into their system, but if they allowed you to 'download' games on PC, you could download any virus, malware etc or software to 'crack open' their closed system. Therefore, any external storage not recognised by the Console (which would include any formatted for PC's) would not read and ask you to format for use on Console first. If you format for Console first, when you plug into PC, it would ask you to format for PC, wiping anything you had on it...

Point is, any external storage formatted to the Xbox will only work on Xbox consoles. Therefore, you would need a 'Console' to download any software to store on it and with Smart Delivery, ideally you want to download on the console you intend to play - otherwise you'll end up with having to download the 'right' version to play.

As Tasuki said, you can set the console to download remotely using the App - but make sure the Console is set-up correctly to download this way otherwise it won't start until you do turn it on. Other options include downloading overnight if its going to take a while.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
