" Yeah, but lets not forget about how much Wii U flopped and with only 13 million sales Nintendo had no reason to keep going the same path, much less make it backwards compatible."
PS4 to PS5 was literally the first Playstation generation to keep your digital library. PS2 to PS3 only guaranteed that you could play your PS2 discs, and only if you had the first model, which is, to this day, the most prone to failure.
Switch, which is the biggest Nintendo console of all time, actually was the first Nintendo console in a long, long while to NOT be retrocompatible.

Hopefully you realize that most of the 30mi Xbox users are not living in medium-high income households in US/UK, right? Even if they did, which it is obviously not the case, consider for a moment the current economy worldwide, and I am sure you will reach the sensible conclusion that not a lot of those 30mi people are willing to spend huge amounts of money on a niche console, let alone happy Playstation owners and proud PC gamers.

Yes, here, on a site for Xbox enthusiasts, which is hosted on UK and visited by people with a lot of time in their hands, which probably correlates to having decent to somewhat high salaries and savings.
Also, going by the the whole Rog Ally X estimated sales numbers, this thing didn't reach even 1mi units sold until now. Steam Deck has similar numbers. I'm not sure how the successor of a dying console, being made by a brand that pats itself on the back for being the biggest publisher on the Playstation ecosystem, is going to do much better than these numbers. But let's suppose it does exceptionally well, INSANELY well, what would it be? 5 mi units sold? Would it even be sustainable?
"PlayStation is on the same market, but there is one thing people forget when talking about migration to another platform: library."
A bit of a pet peeve of mine, but I just hate how peopl regurgitate this ad nauseum ever since Phil said it on that podcast few years back. People just say it again and again and again, and I am left wondering how many games you all believe a normal consumer buys during a whole gaming generation? And even then, most of the widely played games are either free to play, like Fornite, or are annual releases, in which cases all that matters is the latest release. And even if it wasn't the case, buying a different console doesn't automatically redeems your current console unusable. Sure, eventually they will die, but we still have god knows how many SNES from the 1980s still around, so I don't think it matters that much.
The thing is, it is just a cop out. Most give don't give a f*** about it. Sometimes I kinda resent Phil for creating this strawman.
