Re: Ori Creator Shares His Take On The Future Of Xbox's First-Party Strategy

I couldn't have said it better myself. Xbox has been in the 8/10 territory for too long with its first-party portfolio (aside from Playground; those guys and gals really seem to know what they're doing). An 8/10 is fine, but it's not a system-seller — not even close — especially at a time when consoles cost a fortune.

I checked the Xbox 360 exclusives that scored more than 9/10. These included Gears of War 1–3, Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, Mass Effect 1–2 (for quite a while, at least), and Forza 3–4. These were not just games; they were cultural phenomena. Everyone talked about them. As a gamer, you didn't want to miss out. I certainly didn't.

On the Xbox One and Series X/S, a few Forza games have crossed that line. And that's it. In the meantime the competition had their Last of Uses and God of Wars and Zeldas.

If Xbox wants to get back in the game, they need to understand that it has to offer premium gaming experiences. For that, you need talented people. You can't keep firing people and closing studios and then expect gamers to show up for another great-ish but not excellent version of an old IP. Hope they get it before it is too late.
