1) A Disc Drive 2) Backwards Compatibility (which seems a given with the disc-to-digital service)
If they'd publicly commit to a disc drive now, even saying it would be an optional extra, I'd switch all my game purchases over from Playstation to Xbox today.
@TrollOfWar I appreciate the thoughtful reply, instead of just arguing. Thank you!
But I still think a lot of the things you've listed are logistical issues, nothing that couldn't be dealt with if Sony and Microsoft were at least open to licensing out third-party disc drives and disc printing. And who knows, maybe these discussion are happening?
And I was just using LimitedRun as an example, but if there's not someone out there who could turn a slice of 1.5billion dollars worth of physical sales in 2025 into a profitable business model, I'd be amazed. I think it would still have to be fundamental shift in the industry, with limited print runs and higher price points. I do think the days of walking into a supermarket and buying games are numbered but a collectors aspect to it? There's money there.
But we'll see! I stopped buying PC games when it went all digital and maybe I'm fooling myself into thinking I can actually walk away from gaming (though I do have an insane backlog that'll last me years ha!) but I can certainly move to whatever platform is cheapest.
I get the supply chain thing, but that applied to vinyl too, for example, when demand dropped there for a large period of time. I really don't understand why physical gaming can't shift to a similar model, where it is more collector focused, with perhaps external disc drives on offer and third-party companies being in control of discs print runs and distribution, besides console manufacturers simply not wanting to go that route?
I would love it if Xbox could confirm their plans for next-gen sooner rather than later, as I'll gladly buy an Xbox X and shift all my physical purchases over if I know there'll at least be the option for physical games in the future, from LimitedRun, for example.
I'm sceptical it will happen, but just voicing it aloud that I'd buy an Xbox X today if they guaranteed some form of physical support next gen. I was all-in for the X-Box 360 but went back to Playstation after what happened with the Xbox One. Even if it was just an add-on disc drive and most of the games were supplied via LimitedRun and other small run printers.
