We've had a whole bunch of really interesting indie releases on Xbox this week including Wild Blue Skies and Duskfade, and another one is a remake of a 1986 Amiga classic that's just launched on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

The game we're referring to here is called Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns, and it's a strategy title where you have to try and compete for land by taking part in battles, jousts, rescuing maidens and various other things.

You can still play the original 1986 Amiga version in The Legend Returns, but it also adds two brand-new game modes in the form of an "Enhanced" mode with vastly updated graphics and new gameplay mechanics, and a "Kingdom" mode that turns the whole thing into a new game with procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics and battles that are conducted via a deck-building roguelite system.

Here's a bit more about each of them:

Retro Mode. The original Amiga classic, preserved with near-perfect authenticity and quality-of-life enhancements. Classic Mode. Amiga classic reimagined for today. A completely new visual identity, refined mechanics, and smoother systems. Kingdom Mode. An entirely new challenge. Procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and multiple difficulty levels to keep every run unpredictable.

Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns is already out now for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S at a price of £16.74 / $19.99, so you can go and check it out for yourself if you want to. The reviews on Steam are "Mixed" at the time of writing, with positive feedback surrounding many of the improvements in this version, but also negative feedback regarding the supposedly "unresponsive" controls along with a few bugs.

We're quite curious and plan to give it a go over the next few days, and it's certainly nice to finally get this game on an Xbox console after 40 years of its existence! Hopefully it continues to get updates over the coming months as well.
