I wonder if all these sales have any impact in the decision making process of going all digital or staying loyal to the physical format. Of course, I suppose, the tell tale sign would be how many games are being bought digitally at full price on the marketplace to be the real indicator.
Quantity <> quality
There are lots of games on sale but they mostly fall into the categories of: always on sale (AC, CoD), old, a very small discount or DLC to an existing game (Sims). I guess if you've had a game on your wishlist that wasn't good enough to buy already then now might be the time but anything recent doesn't seem to be discounted at all or very much.
I'm unclear how much of the sales go back to the original devs/publishers or if there is a cutoff for how long that is. I cannot imagine that this sale is going to help any studio already struggling so it is really about just trying to sell more games for MS to record in their books.
For comparison, Playstation is also having their summer sale and they have a lot more games on sale (~6300). Again, quantity <> quality.
@Kingleo31 I have double dipped into digital games that I already own physical (usually in a different platform) all the way back to the early days of Steam. If I can get convenient access to a super-cheap digital copy of a game, I will take advantage of that. That does not mean I no longer care about the ownership of a physical copy [preferably with the whole game IN the media] that I can lend to friends, access even if the stores go offline, or even just toss on a shelf for display.
I honestly don't think any fan of physical media is 100% adverse of buying digital, especially when the digital copy is acquired in extremely low discounts like these.
@CoolDadTx Most big publishers have their own math and internal logistics on how, when and how deep to put their titles on sale.
It's extremely rare, for example, to see some specific titles ever go under 50%. Don't think I ever seen Sekiro go under 50%, and it was only after the DLC launched that I saw Cyberpunk go under 50%, but the DLC was not on sale. We now are at a point where Cyberpunk's DLC bundles are at around 58% off.
Big publishers have a lot of data on trends and what needs a boost via a sale. I will agree with you on one thing: Ubisoft. They are extremely aggressive with their sales and it's a huge part of why I tend to avoid buying their games early unless I'm extremely hyped. I have way too often bought a Ubsoft game only to see them hit 70% off before I even sit down to touch it, and that highly discourages me from being an early adopter for their games. I think that's one of their biggest issues, they have devaluated their offerings with their sale frequency. Alas, that's a bit of a different topic.
Back on the impact of these sales, many indies take advantage of these sales to gain visibility, plus a solo indie selling 5000 at $2 thanks to these sales (assuming they get that lucky) is likely getting enough money to pay the bills for 2 or 3 months out of a game that was likely already not selling. Not only that but once the sale is over, their titles might had climbed up on store's algorithms and be visible for a few days or weeks after. This can result in a few more copies sold, especially if a buyer starts playing the game and their friends see the game on their friend list activity feed.
TLDR: yes, these sales move the needle for almost everyone involved.

I do exactly the same thing, I'd bet it's fairly common practice as well.
I'll do the same thing if I buy something digital for " reasons", and I'll usually camp out the physical copy for cheap.
It's a hobby I've done for the last 38 years, and I enjoy seeing it displayed- so many great memories/experiences sitting on those shelves
I finally gave into FFXII. I have it on Switch but have not completed it. I am going to play it on my Series X now.
@bert0503 Cool. It looks and plays great on Series X (60fps 4K). It took me a while to get used to the mechanics and combat, but I loved it once I did.
@bert0503 I bought it this morning too! Looks and plays very smooth
